Hello forum, I’ve owned this 2017 Tacoma for a little over three years now and is rolling over 120k. The 2017 Tacoma, having the 2GR-FKS v6 engine. While in drive gear, also in park, at a complete stop it seems to be making a ticking noise and its most pro dominant sounding while underneath the truck. I haven’t had a chance to listen from everywhere, but with my windows down I can hear it, it comes and goes, but it’s noticeably louder than the regular cleaning cycle the engine does for its injectors. Any suggestions or has anyone had this problem before? I’ll give an update after listening further too.

Before the comedians come into this however, it’s not a Rod knocking lol. But I should also probably throw in that the trucks oil is changed between every 5000-7500 miles. It’s also coming up on that time for a tune up, maybe that might be an issue?

Sent the video to a mechanic friend and he said it sounds like a knock senser. Something about the timing being off. He also said sounds like there is more than one thing going on.

I would think a knock sensor would throw a check engine light ( CEL).
I had mine go out on my old Frontier some years ago, nothing was actually knocking, just the sensor would flip out every so often and it always happened when i would put my key in the ignition and turn it, CEL would come on
and the truck would make a clicking noise as if i were trying to turn over a dead battery. eventually it would start, retarded timing, running like shit then i would turn it off, then i could start it back up and it was fine, CEL would go away.
I would have to clear the code every time to pass emissions.

With all things considered too it hasn’t thrown any code on it since I bought it. Other than months ago I switched the gas cap, could any of these issues seemingly go out without my computer throwing a code at me?

See if the noise is coming from the vacuum pump. The pump ticks and ,if go bad, can produce a knocking sound.
Per Toyota, the pump should be inspected and replaced at 120k
