Is it upside down in the picture? The angle iron looks backwards to me. If I'm wrong, I'm curious as to how you're going to fasten the deck.

 

Yes, upside down. I'll get the axles attached then I'll flip it right side up.

 

Why did you use angle for the center cross braces instead of tube?

Assuming the strength and weight are about equal, is just to make it easier to bolt the deck boards on?

 

Angle is used to keep weight down. The angle is 1/2 as heavy as tube steel. It's also 1/2 as strong. Which is fine. This trailer is designed for light loads.

I'll be using 1/4", self tapping floorboard screws to hold down flooring.

One of the cross members is tube steel. This is the tongue anchor point as well as a x member.

 

angle iron is also least strong with rotational loads. in this case, the deck boards will be tieing all the angle together, resulting in completed surface that's about 2/3's as strong as the same traielr design with square or c-channel crossmembers.

i'm setting up for angle iron as well. i had originally planned for 3" c-channel cross members, but quickly realized that i'll never need the full trailer rating at the center of the trailer for the entire length. any large item i put on it will have multiple points of contact anyways, and vehicles will ride the outer edge, where the angle is strongest anyways.

Slight derailment on the trailer build.

I had intended to put air conditioning in my shop when I built it 10 years ago.

I fucked up and put windows in it that match the house, never thinking that a window mounted AC units won't work with jealousy windows.

Found a deal on 24k mini split unit.
With AC, my wife can spend time in the shop with me without the heat Making her feel worse.

I started the install on Sunday. It was started up Tuesday afternoon.

My shop was 86* at 2pm. It was 74* at 3pm.

More details to fallow if anyone is interested in the mini split install.

Are the crossmembers that are closer together for the front of the trailer? Since most of the load weight/ force is placed there?

 

I still need to add cross members to the open space. Had another project come in and had to rob those pieces.

 

Is this one of the units that comes pre charged & ready to hook up the line set?

 

No. This one the base unit has a charge but the inside evaporator comes with 5 lbs of nitrogen.

 

I wondered how they evacuated the air in the line set, clever.

 

The kit comes with a template so you know where to drill the access hole and where to mount the bracket.

I cheated and left the template in place when I screwed the bracket to the wall.
