No its for All VEHICLES, unless it gets changed, its a pilot program here in San Diego. And complete BS and unfair to the folks that pay gas tax on a regular basis. The statement that the state is not making enough revenue to cover road repairs is complete BS, I keep running over the same crappy roads and freeways.
This state has been sooo bad at spending for special interest not related to what the bonds/taxes are meant for we are now in the hole by over 100Billion.

Hey but lets build a high speed rail to Las Vegas from LA.....:crapstorm:

This is before Ca controllers found another 24 billion not accounted for.

This is the first time I have ever heard of this. Of course, I have not owned a truck since 1998. Wow. Teh Socialist Republik of Kommiefornia never ceases to amaze me. I've grown up here and this is the worst it has ever been. What a shame. smh
Gas Guzzler Tax on the wifey's car and now my little truck identifies as a commercial vehicle. Sheesh.

as much as our registration sucks, other states have it even worse. A buddy of mine in CO had to pay sales tax on his new truck at purchase...and has to continue paying an adjusted taxed amount each renewal period, based on the value of his truck each year.

Some states have a lifetime registration of $30 in Arizona you don’t even pay tax on a used car (the title doesn’t even have a place for you to put a dollar amount) we can’t get the Land Cruiser 70 series or the hilux because of commiefornia (all vehicles have to meet 50 state emissions)

    let the CA bashing begin!!

the commercial tag thing has been around as long as i can remember it. my 1996 Chevy had them. if you're getting excited about it now...i dont know what to say about you. now for the NON-CA people getting excited, that makes even less sense. very few CA people crapping on your state. we have better shit to do.

and not entirely sure if some of you know what the definition of Communism is.. blending the word with California makes zero sense. there is only one dude i know of wishing for a Dictatorship. hahahha....

Is this a serious question...? It's a WEIGHT charge. Electric vehicles are very heavy.

I wonder if anyone has tried to get away with registering a Tacoma with a soft topper as a non commercial vehicle?

edit: The weight fee argument is ironic for ICE vehicles, because EV's don't use gas therefore they don't contribute registration fees to maintain roads. I guess they have to charge the non EV drivers double to cover the road maintenance costs.

Yeah in my state we have to pay for permission to own vehicles yearly. It depreciates a little each year but we are taxed on any motor vehicle that is licensed and driven on roads or water and even trailers that our boat and such are hauled on. Not much you can do except pay…

    And?

it has been this way for a while.

apparently not doing a lawn care business, not hauling, etc makes it commercial.

The cali commercial truck thing has been in place for more than 50 years. A long time ago you could have non-commercial plates on a pickup but you could not put anything in the back in the bed or you would be cited if caught. Now all trucks require commercial plates without exception.
Just got my annual registration for both my truck and car , combined over $1000 annually. I hate writing that check. California is the highest taxed state in the US but whatch ya gonna do. It’s expensive here but I like all cali offers. Yes there are a lot of negatives that I won’t go into cause I’d get the ban hammer, but every state has its negatives.

I could give plenty of examples but if you go down this route you are either going to get banned or get the thread shut and locked. Pls get off the political thing.
