smashed this, broke that, covered it up with tape and paint
I broke my last bike trying to ride trails

I was putting about 15 miles on the bike 4-6 days a week
Not a ton of hills but mostly just lack of access at this minute not a lack of interest
and @WormSquirts recommended a aluminum frame over a carbon
But I didn’t see any aluminum ones that I didn’t hate

And I grew up with Diamondback BMX so it’s a shame to hear of the quality decline

Looking for a bike that can be a do it all bike
I want to be able to pedal with some speed
If I had a designated downhill area I’d plan more around that
But since I have medium trails near me and have to drive for the rest
I need it to be an all arounder like the Santa Cruz high top

People will call anything they don’t ride junk. Just the way it rolls. My area hosts one of the hardest races in the entire freaking country and people are finishing it on anything from giants or diamondbacks to pivot etc. Aluminum and carbon. BTW, I’ll put 5k down right now that @Evenflow couldnt finish said race.

I put 116 miles on that broken bike in the month of May, all actual pedaling riding, not much coasting.
I was trying to build up to a 30mile ride 4x a week but
I broke the chain tensioner and then broke the gear turret all in one ride

We do on average 80-90 miles a month in the summer. I’m on a reign advanced and the fiancé is on a budget build trance. Both bikes do just as well as the other. Honestly man, you don’t need to spend insane money to have fun. Her trance we got for under a grand, put probably 1500$ in upgrades on it and she keeps up just fine.

Our terrain is absolutely wicked. Rocks, roots, trees, jumps. Both bikes have been awesome for 4 years now.

I’m told there is some insane stuff around me
But I was working up to it when I broke the last one.
Ideally looking to buy something that I can ride for 3-4 years
And I’ll probably do 100ish miles a month.
I have a super great shop local for maintenance
    But they only sell trek

oh man you just picked a bike fight with the wrong dude

    1. Diamondback is junk, it’s sad but true. Most of the old legacy brands have been bought and sold a dozen times and turned into walmart brands. Giant is the single largest manufacturer of bikes in the world prob half the mass market bikes in the world are actually made by giant. their mtb’s are just that mass manuf average tech. there are a ton of better bikes at all price levels these days with far better suspension tech. giant hasn’t updated anything in 20 years. Both of you guys constantly talk miles of shit about how any truck that isn’t a cage / ls swap / shocks in the cab etc is useless but when you talk about bikes your hyping the stock 85 ranger …:rofl:it’s offensive

    2. re: i couldn’t finish your silly michigan race… you couldn’t even breathe at the altitude we race at & i have a private mtb trail that you would show up at and fake an injury and scurry away from. I literally grew up in a bike shop, not usually one to toot my own horn but this is an argument you can’t win lol. I had my first bike sponsor at 13 bmx racing in 84’. That was on Diamondback btw. Competitive vert rider for years bitd. 17x class in 88’ finished 2nd nationally turned pro and toured doing shows from the time i was 14. Raced mtb and road bikes, have ridden multiple centuries. Still ride a 40k enduro race annually. I was still racing MTB DH until a few years ago as well. sponsored mtb’er for a long time. Finished 5th in state in DH in X class at 48…but yeah those big michigan mountains and gnarly terrain would probably be too intimidating

have you ever been a centerfold ? ya’ didn’t think so…

    IMG_0175.jpg

and still pretty handy on a bmx bike at 53 years young…

    DSC_2451.jpg

my 4 year old has two sponsors and shreds harder than you:rofl:

Chad, in all seriousness Specialized and Trek are the two best mass manuf bikes they are still super active at every level of racing and developing tech. check out Jensonusa and competitive cyclist, they typically have one or two season old closeouts probably 1/2 off. Knowing your mechanical aptitude and your tastes in truck parts you will not be happy with anything less than a shimano xt or sram xo level build. Anything less than that and you might as well buy a trd pro and rip all the oe crap off of it and spend twice as much upgrading it… a past year model at that level is your best bet. Most bike shops and on line retailers also have financing so go big now pay later and keep saving up for your 4 seater 250k truck

Were you able to make it street legal? I know here there are some issues with making that happen. I need to do more research. They would make the ultimate hunting rig. Track setup for winter etc….

Im in South Carolina, which is a lawless state when it comes to vehicles, so I just took the title and insurance to the DMV like anything else. No inspections or anything here.

Completely state dependant. Some states are fine with them, some are absolutely nots, and then there are a few with grey areas that you can work within to get one legal.

I’m seeing ways to register in other states. Montana being the main one. Basically have to create an LLC. No sales tax in Montana etc. Seems sketch. But the crazy world of Reddit has many many stories of success doing it this way. So basically, you could own it in any state at that point.

Some say they had success in Michigan. Others say they have but it was revoked and others flat denied.
