But many of you may or may not be aware that 2012-2015 2G ECU's that have had the TSB update (updated Cal ID) or that have been tuned (most will update the Cal ID as part of the tune) render these ECU's incapable of being converted to the TRD S/C Calibration.

I've worked out and successfully reversed my 2014's Cal ID after being tuned, back to the original Cal ID making the ECU eligible for the S/C update. This reversal will allow the BullyDog or TRD S/C CUW to be applied.

This process will require the ECU being sent to OTT (at this time) for the reversal process.

A spare ECU will no longer be required if you have been previously been tuned or had the TSB update performed!

Just had my 2014 tuned this week, guess it's time to start reading through the thread.

I got my truck tuned yesterday running lite/mild throttle sensitivity. It was hard for me to notice a difference because the drive back was traffic, traffic, traffic (2 hour drive during rush hour when everyone was getting off work) but when I got back home, I took it down some back roads and noticed a bit more torque down low. Around 2500-3500, the truck seems to pull a little harder than stock which had almost nothing until almost 4k rpm when the VTEC-like thrust kicks in. It also feels like it downshifts faster, too and pressing ECT for the Mild throttle makes the truck a bit more "jumpy" if you will when applying throttle from a stop. Nothing too jarring and it doesn't peel tires like what some have said the Spicy one does. I do like Mild, I might just get it re-done for Mild/Medium in the future.

The biggest things I've noticed is that the truck FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINALLY cruises in 6th gear on the freeway. On the stock tune, it would cruise in 5th gear and wouldn't shift into 6th until I'm going 85+ and I never go that fast so it was never in 6th. I can comfortably cruise 70-75 now in 6th with rpms at 1900-2000 instead of 2300-2500. The other thing I noticed, just earlier today when I was joy riding the thing was that it revved past 6k while I was in ect mode. I know redline isn't at 6k exactly, and the tach puts the red at around 6100 but in second gear, in ECT on the Mild setting, and flooring it it went all the way to around 6300 before I let off the gas and it shifted into 3rd. I'm not complaining about a higher redline since I love high revving engines (I own an FA5 and love hearing that engine scream at 8k rpm), but I wasn't aware that the tune lets the engine rev further out? Is this higher redline/rev point from the tune or was it always like this from factory? Not complaining, just curious.

Something else I noticed but I'm not sure if it's a real thing or just placebo/my imagination, is that it feels like the truck actually pulls a bit harder up top. The truck was always peaky and pulls harder past 4k rpm than below but now it feels like it's got more power at the higher rpms. Again, it could just be my imagination. So far I've put maybe 150 miles on the truck since it got the tune yesterday and I don't know if the ecu has a "learning" period after flashing the tune but it feels like an improvement. If I'm gonna be honest, I don't necessarily notice a world of difference like some commenters say but I'm happy with the tune mainly because it finally shifts into 6th gear, more responsive throttle response, and it holds gears a little longer rather than trying to shift at or below 3k rpm at all times.

Edit: I didn't get a chance to ask the tuner when he was doing his thing, but does it matter what type of gas I put into the truck? The tank is currently on 87 but would it make a difference if I put 91 in there for the next couple of fill ups? Are there specific tunes for premium gas that takes advantage of the higher octane?

Edit 2: I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm running 255/85r16 Falken Wildpeak MT01 tires which weights a whopping 60lbs each. Other than that, the only other things I've added that would increase the weight of my truck is simply the TRD Skid and Talon's Garage powdercoated steel Cat Shield/transmission skid which is probably negligible in terms of weight. The heavy tires are what'll probably affect acceleration if anything since that's rotational mass. Also, I managed to do some pretty mean burnouts with the tune. I don't know if it's the tune, the mud tires with no grip on road, or if the tune moved enough torque down low that it can finally do a burnout but I swear, stock Tacomas can't do burnouts because of the lack of power (I've tried on a couple of rental 3rd gens, tried in a 4th gen rental, too and it does burnouts easily). Maybe I'm just bad, lmao.

Yes, particularly in hot temps and under load premium fuel absolutely makes a difference. This is pretty much standard on high compression engines in general. Again, not required. In my personal testing the standard tune responds up to around 95 octane for maximum performance.

You will be sure to hear about it here when we've got an update. We're doing everything we can to expedite things but this isn't a process that can be rushed. We operate on their timeline.

Q: do you have a document that describes in detail what these different levels of tune accomplish?

I was wondering if there is any stomach for a tune optimization for the AES Intake Manifold spacer?

I’ll work on getting a graphic made that illustrates what one can expect. From the different offerings. It’s been on the to-do list for some time.

You’re perfectly fine to use the AES spacer with the OEM Calibration or with any OTT file without ill effect.

As far as developing a specific AES spacer calibration we have been contact with AES about receiving T&E units for dyno and development purposes. But I do not believe we’ve received a 3G unit as of yet.

The original post has been updated with some graphics to give some visualization of what our settings do compared to stock and one another based on closed to fully open. I hope this helps!

    Thanks!
I updated your graphic legend for those of us with old eyes...
The MILD curve appears to be the most linear, and would be the one I will select with CARB approval comes through.

Your graphics for STOCK is exactly how it feels to my foot, especially after so many years of Drive-By-Cable in my 1991.

Q: do you have any similar explanation for the Stock profile trannie re-work on a Gen 3?

Mine is 100% factory stock, and will remain so.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make a graph similar to this for the transmission shift schedule due to IP theft concerns. If there's a particular concern you have regarding where the vehicle shifts on the OE mapping, message me and I'll work with you. We can collect some information to identify the specific location for a given gear and we can discuss what you'll experience with OTT.
