Need advice

I recently purchased an 06 Tacoma v6 access cab TRD sport.

The previous owner put longtube headers, straight pipe and magnaflow muffler. It drove find at first but recently the CEL came on and it’s been driving like it’s in limp mode and very rich.

I took it to a shop and they said since the cats were removed, the only way to fix the CEL and crappy performance is to install new cats back on which since there’s 4 total, would like be around 3-4k for oem.

Any advice on the best way to proceed in this situation? Or am I better off selling it for whatever I can and moving on?

It’a a clean, great truck otherwise and I’d like to keep it. But if my only option is to dump a ton of cash to get it running right it may not be worth it…

Did said shop put it on a scanner and provide you with codes?

You need to take it to get it scanned. Most automotive places will do it for free and provide you with a print out of the codes which you can either research or post here.

If it’s even driving fine without cats and without a cel I’d be skeptical that it magically needs 5k worth of exhaust work suddenly.
