only the NA owner's manual recommends just 0-w20. Internation owner's manuals recommends a wide variety of weights.

I've got a horizontal spin on oil filter similar to the tacomas and I've never filled the oil filter with oil, just rubbed it on the seal. I'm currently at about 286k miles.

Same goes for my spin on horizontal oil filter on my 07 Honda cb900f, currently about 28k miles.

Edit: if the owners manual says to put oil in the filter I will do it, but I've never seen it.

I mentioned in the video a channel called The Motor Oil Geek. He’s got some really insightful content about lube. Check this video out.

There are two sides to each ledger. This guy–and a lot of other mechanics–advise against it. Zoom over to about 12:30 and he'll explain why he refused to prime the filter.

The unfortunate part of the internet is that anybody can post their unbridled opinion in video form. He does not know what he’s talking about. This is evidenced by the fact he says, “if something as small as 1-2 microns gets pumped into the crankshaft bearings it can and will do damage.” No, wrong. Used, filtered oil is absolutely full of 1-2 micron particles, far more than new oil, as those are below the threshold of what gets trapped in an oil filter. They do not do significant damage. It’s the particles around 10-25 microns that do the most damage, but it takes time.

Fresh oil is highly pre-filtered from the manufacturer and is cleaner than used filtered oil circulating in the crank. There is no greater chance of contamination when pre-filling filters.

By contrast, when not prefilling, there is a 100% chance of temporary starvation. Starvation will cause more wear due to loss of MOFT. Even if the oil in the filter had particles in it, it would cause less wear than running the engine dry even for a short period.

Well, this guy is a professional mechanic. He's not just anybody.

But as I said, there are two sides to a ledger.

Good. You're a geologist or chemist or some such profession and he works on autos.

Look, you have your beliefs, and I have mine. Neither of us should waste our time on this debate. I'll not change your mind, and you won't change mine.

    Hello;
First time posting, have a question about oil lines going to oil filter housing.
How long has Toyota been using rubber oil lines?
I HAD rubber lines on my 2009 Lexus rx 350 (2GR-FE 2nd gen.) and had one develop a leak while driving. Good thing my wife saw the smoke and said”Why is your car blowing smoke…?”
Needless to say that rubber hose developed a pin hole that was squirting oil all over!
Lexus knew about the problem and only sent out a TSP, no recall.
I know this had to be destroying engines with drivers unaware of what was going on.
Lexus corrected the problem with a steel set of lines to replace the rubber ones.-
I Am going to pick up the new Limited in a couple of days, and this already has me concerned…
Has anyone in the past have issues with these hoses?

The best oil I ran in my turbo engine is 5w-40. It held up really well.

I tried. Obviously it is not there as they have a Hilux. Why so defensive? I would love to see an example of the Tacoma manual showing other different oil weights. Maybe it does not exist after all.

I hope I never get to a point in life where I simply refuse to change my mind based on evidence. That seems like a sad way to live. Imagine being so set in your ways you refuse to ever consider anything that could be different.

Try this instead, and you can both be righteous:
Avoid damage to your engine with "clear flood mode" (youtube.com)

And let me guess: You haven't watched the video posted by mechanic Rainman Repairs on why he argues against doing it.

You'll also be challenged to find a Toyota service manual that recommends priming the oil filter, which tells me that dealers don't do it.

Well, the only Tacoma manual that probably will show that is the Mexico manual, or you can just find out what vehicles have the t24a and look those manuals, but I aint doing all that for you.
