I've considered the Tundy, but the expectation that the motor will blow during ownership gives me great pause lol.

Does anyone know if there's been any numbers on failure rate of the Tundras? I never know on these things if it's 1:10 or 1:100.

You will never get that answer. But the fact that there is an official recall, tells you all you need to know. It’s no longer a forum fear mongering story

Yep and I'm betting its gonna be expanded, cause there are guys on the Tundra groups/forums with 2024's same issue and hybrids. The fact its occuring in platforms with same engine in two different places (Japan and Alabama) along with some saying its a design issue makes Toyotas "manufacturering debris" story suspect.

I am in the market for a 1/2 ton full size. I was zeroing in on a Tundra but I have little confidence the engine problems are contained to the original 100k they recalled. So far the failures have happened with as little as 200 miles all the way up to 66,000 miles meaning that the problem could be like a slow moving cancer that gets you at middle age. Hybrids and 2024's are failing too but in much smaller numbers because hybrids are fewer and 2024's are newer. I expect the recall to expand.

Imagine hitting 60k miles and then your motor goes kaput and the only remedy is a $25k check.

Right now I am considering an F-150 with the Coyote V8. I have driven them in our work fleet and they drive great. I have not owned a domestic brand in almost 20 years but I might be headed that way soon. I would rather get a Toyota if it were shown to be reliable.

Yep, been shopping 2018-2021 Tundras with less than 30k, but holy resale value, they are holding strong.

I'll be honest here, I don't see that ever changing. These will be regarded as the last of the "Real Tundras" given their well earned reputation and the new gens well earned reputation.

Now might be the time to find a well loved, old man owned, seldom used Tundra and ride this out. They're only going to get harder to find and IMO, more expensive.

Neighbor just bought a new F150 XLT with the 2.7 and tells me he gets 25 MPG as a work truck and is generally happy with it.

I'd be a fool to not consider the same as it matches my use exactly. It is really nice inside, even at the XLT level.

I understand the appeal of the 5.0 too.

I've driven a few of the 2.7's as well. Very powerful. The 2.7's are regarded to be pretty reliable with their compact graphite block which handles high cylinder pressures well. I am looking at a no frills STX model. I don't really need too many bells and whistles.

As a brand loyal Toyota customer I feel like I am cheating on my wife haha, but the third gen Tundra seems like too much of gamble at the moment. Maybe after they get things sorted the 3.4 can be a reliable motor. I know the 5.7 had issues early on too and historically it's seen a bullet proof now.

STX is basically a XT work truck, plus a few things right?

Yeah, kind of between an XL and XLT. It's more of a value truck. No keyless start (has a normal keyless entry/physical key to start which I actually prefer), no power seats, no 360 camera and things like that. It can be optioned to have every engine except the 3.5. It has basically everything I would ever want and actually doesn't look like a work truck. Can be had for sub $50k. I actually prefer the wheels and grill of the STX as I am not a fan of tons of chrome. The STX can also be had with the 3.73 rear end and tow package. All F-150's come standard with the big screen now too.

You did better then me. My wife and I just completed the first leg of our summer vacation trip from MD to GA. Not one 4th gen Tacoma sighting. Tomorrow, we continue on to southern FL with maybe some better luck.

We live just outside of Wash, DC and I sit in a lot of traffic on my way home from work. With that, I have plenty of time to 'truck watch'. My total 4th sighings is 1.

Kind of wild how Toyota stopped being the "safe, reliable" choice and now you have to look to Ford since they have been doing Turbos for over a decade and seem to have most kinks worked out.

Right, makes my decision to raptor shop easier, since heck a platinum tundra is about same cost loaded up and I know the Raptor is no worse in quality or reliability and will hold better resale likely.

Yeah, I kind of think the EPA is pushing Toyota out of the business model that worked so well for them for so long. That is, relatively simple powertrains that don't lead anyone in terms of specs, but are reliable. Toyota had to compete with Ford, who is on their third generation of EcoBoost, in one generation. It seems like Tundra sales were doing really well but it will interesting to see how the recalls affect the coming month's sales numbers. Anecdotally all of the dealers around me are overflowing with Tundras. I think eventually it'll be a reliable powertrain but obviously things aren't looking good now. I have less concern with the Tacoma as it seems to be a simpler motor. Time will tell I guess.

No company has done more to completely destroy their reputation of bulletproof reliable trucks you buy to keep for 10 to 15 years… or more… than Toyota. That was literally the only reason anyone was justifying their price premiums over the competition.
