We have a stretch of highway near me I have to go over everyday and they have cut out horizontal channels every 50 ft for pipes and did a crap job repaving. It’s also around a curve and the truck jumps all over the place and is very unstable. Super annoying. And speed bumps are so pronounced compared to anything I’ve ever owned. Washboards are bad too

This thread is perfect timing for me, as I plan to swap out my OR shocks at the same time as front pads/rotors. I am planning 4600s all round since I am not lifting and they are whats recommended.

Also one of the more affordable options. They are more than adequate for the casual off-roader especially when tires are aired down appropriately for whatever type of terrain you are on.

They are Bilstein but not 4600s. That is a common misconception.

See post #1 on this thread for a picture of the Toyota off-road OEM shock next to the real 4600.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trd-off-road-vs-bilstein-4600’s.646751/

The stock shocks are puny compared to the real thing.

4600s will perform the same as 5100s, the only difference is the 5100s are height adjustable on the front. Some like to upgrade to the 6112 on the front as it is even beefier than the 4600/5100, but the extra is expense if not worth it for most people in my opinion. Most are better off airing down tires appropriately and keeping a battery powered air pump handy.

    Who recommends 4600s?

As per information obtained from Bilstein, the valving in the 4600 and 5100 series is identical. The main difference (besides the finish) is the 5100 is more for a lifted truck even though you can get the rear 5100 for stock ride height.
My Limited 4x4 has the black shocks factory. For my use (95% pavement) this truck rides superb, maybe a slight float when hitting a series of larger dips at highway speeds but well controlled. I’ve driven the OR, Sport and Limited and for my tastes I will stick with the shocks I have.

    People who don’t want/need a lift.

I'm wondering if the TRD Sport and the Limited have the same shocks. Mine are all black on the top and blue on the bottom.

Lots of vendors out there who sell them, after a quick google search looks like 1200-1300. I would go ahead and pay to extra $ to have them pre-assembled.

Depends what you are using the truck for, the rebound on the 6112s is a lot more controlled than 5100s (&4600) and will handle the larger hits with a lot more control.

I don’t think so the ones on the limited are all black.
I read the Sport has Tokico and the limited has Hitachi? Or vice versa not sure but they are different.
