I'm thinking about putting a snorkel on my mower. Man, does that air filter collect crap. Gotta clean it every use.

My lawn mower is 25+ years old. Original oil, original blade, never been cleaned or hosed, just start (every time first pull), empty bag a few times, then put away for next time. No air filter. If it had one I might get rid of it. just me.

I think one of the main reasons for a snorkel is because you removed your fender liners due to larger tires, exposing your air-intake to the elements. Apart from that, they offer a bit of insurance in an "oh-shit" water situation. I mean.. it's not dumb if it keeps you from hydrolocking your engine. As long as you don't think having a snorkel turns you into a U-boat captain and your taco into Das Boot, you should be good. There's a lot of fine silt particulate out here in the PNW when the rain goes away. If I had a snorkel, I'd also make sure to pair it with a precleaner intake. There's very little difference in the dust that hangs out around six feet as the dust that hangs out at three feet here. If you just want a snorkel for looks, some sort of Lee Press On Nails for the taco, make sure you get one for both sides.

I carried a Fisker hatchet for 15,000 miles across the west. Then the one trip I left it at home...

I realized I wasted a lot of mental energy carrying a hatchet I never needed. So I got a Sven saw.

Carried that for a while too.

Then the one trip I left it at home I ended up realizing it was just another Fisker hatchet.

    Yeah, OK.
BTW, I don't have basketball rims in my earlobes or a bullring in my nose either.
    Just call me old-school 'tight'.

    This. ^^^^^

Every photo of a military vehicle with a snorkel (Humvees, etc.) I've ever seen has a round cyclone filter on it, not one of the dorky elephants-trunk-style open-ended grates.

Cyclone filters are proven technology & used extensively for separating dust out of air in industrial processes, wood shops, etc.

OP the air raid snorkel looks the best IMO and may work with your roof rack depending on the brand.
