This will be my first truck, I've been doing research and seeing a lot of opinions on the two different models. I want to be able to camp and sleep out of my truck and take it long distances across the country. I am trying to find which model would be best for that. I was wondering if anyone could tell me some of the differences between the two, and give a little more information from past owners, Thank you.

Hey, I would 100% advise in getting the off-road simply because of the elocker already in the back. I know there have been several places I have gone where it made things so much smoother just having that one locker and the atrac. However, that being said an sr5 with a good set of tires a good driver and a winch can be unstoppable. I would say it would come down to where you find the best deal and how rough the roads are to your camp site. I love my off-road, but, I bought mine before covid and prices skyrocketed.

You will be able to camp and sleep out of either model. I have an SR5 4wd and have never had an issue. As someone who enjoys offroading while trying to be as frugal as possible, my vote is that a lightly modded SR5 is as capable as a stock TRD OR for most people, while still being cheaper.

    Excellent choice.

But seriously OP, unless you're in the 1% of people that need the locking diff, safe yourself the money. Get a nice lift and some tires, go camping and never think about it again.

You can camp, travel and sleep in a good SUV more comfortably than a truck. Like a 4 Runner.

Do you need and open bed for something else?

Considering that most people swap out all the TRD OR parts for upgrades anyway (besides the locker), they ultimately end up paying a $4k premium for a couple of badges on the sides of the bed.

^OP had a single post last year then went AWOL. It's unclear which gen of Tacoma he was looking at. 4th gen OR of course has more hardware advantages over SR5, like bigger rear axle, bigger brakes, and bigger CV axles, but would be limited to the trail limo DCLB config if OP wanted to sleep in the bed.
