60+ year old thread.

I've tried most popular vehicle battery brands. Very little difference in longevity, prices all over the map. I'll stick with Wal-Mart. I get their one-step-up better one. It will last 5+ years. always fresh, good price. I let them install it this time because I'm old and can't see good anymore. I have changed them in their parking lot. It got us home (test #one). I wrote the date on a piece of tape, stuck it on the top. I'll check the voltage once a month or so, after it's been sitting as long as it ever does. For me, checking it frequently produces a pattern, and brings attention to a less-than-ideal vehicle battery. I purposely don't write it down, so it also checks my memory of a month ago.

I have found 4 to 5 years in my base Tacoma too. I do run a sound amplifier for the radio, and I have upgraded and added lighting all over the truck.

Good morning. Yesterday was a laid-back day. When visiting my cousin, did 4 small items in her condo, actually my son did most of the work, the assisted living facility called her, and her husband was sent back to the emergency room. I feel terrible for her and her husband. Went out to a wine tasting event for wine club members and had a good time. Today I am doing ribs, chicken and baked beans on the smoker.

 

Morning all:

2024/25 Pa. hunting licenses become available today, two places I used to get them to get them have closed down since last year, one was a hardware store and the other a sporting goods store . Going to wait until later in the day or tomorrow or even Wed. to pick one up but need to get it by Thurs. in order to be able to apply early for a doe lic.

 

Another hot day in the Rockies! Looks like it will be this way for a while.
Snow run-off should be peaking out by the end of the month. Hopefully streams will clear up enough to start summer fly fishing.
Kettlebell day! May be a tough workout since I missed a week. Oh well the Dr said what ever I have been doing to keep it up because it seems to be working well on my health.

Well Mimi and I found out over the weekend that Baxter, our 3 y/o boston terrier rescue does NOT take well to thunder!

He was shaking terrible.

He was so bad that we found him in Mimi's closet, which he has never been in, in the far back corner rolled up in a ball and shaking a lot.

 

I had a shepherd mix like that. She would sit on my feet and lean against me and just tremble. Same thing with fireworks.

 

My son has a 4-year old Silver Lab he bought from a breeder of "Gun Dogs" in Colorado; loud noises like thunder, fireworks, cars backfiring, and of course firearms discharges literally don't even make her blink. That all changed last week when a bolt of lightning hit the iron railing of his top-floor Miami condominium; he said she literally levitated four feet off the floor and then ran into the bedroom leaving a trail of pee in her wake. He told me he didn't stop laughing for an hour.

 

Afternoon all:

Got the hunting lic. after waiting only for a couple minutes, the guy issuing them told the guy in front of me that on Thurs. when the doe lic. go on sale he better be in line around 6:00, they start selling them at 8:00. They took something as simple as mailing them in and turned it into a royal cluster****!

 

My Labrador retrievers over the last 40+ years have all been trained hunting dogs and gun shyness was one of the things included in their training. Once they are gun shy or afraid of loud noises like fireworks and thunder it’s almost impossible to change that. I suggest 2 things. Get some sedatives from your vet to use around the 4th and during periods of thunder. Also this works for many but not all, get your dog a “thunder shirt”. You can find them online and even in some pet stores. They are snug fitting kind of T shirts for dogs and for some reason they calm most dogs during fireworks and thunder storms.
