The problem with the current system is that most don’t get a deserving sentence for the crime and are out in no time at all to repeat.

The system has tons of problems - how bout all those untested rape kits . . . . .
I mean why report a crime when you know they are just going to embarrass you and won't do shit to the offender?

I agree it's far far more likely to be someone you know. Perhaps the risk of a random person used to be less than being struck by lightning, but I don't think it's that anymore. That has been on the rise for a long time unfortunately. There's no sense being ruled by fear which is what you're essentially getting at, I think, but there's wisdom in more caution today than before.

All this being afraid of the boogie man is just too much. This constant and pervasive fear in our society is making people ignore actual/real threats - it is skewing rational judgement/thought.

It's like the prepper who can't even walk to the end of his driveway without being winded. What's he gonna do when he has to walk a mile to get water?

Fear is an issue. Fear mongering is an issue.
People do need to figure out how to be functional and live normal lives and be smart. Agreed.

I very much believe it's on the rise. Especially worldwide. I know some people who are involved in off-the-books rescue groups. I believe them. I believe what I've heard from my relatives in Central America. These are no nonsense, very matter of fact people.
