Hey everyone, I was wondering if any of yall have replaced the rear bumper on a 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma. I got into an accident the other day and it tore up my bumper. The most damage was done to the plastic chrome piece on the side and I was just going to replace that for a quick and easy fix but I got to looking up under it and it looks like the whole bumper is a little bent on that side. It put a dent in the outside of the bed as well but I could stick my hand up under there and get it mostly out. I wanted to replace the bumper with a steel one and just spend the extra money so maybe this won’t happen again but with all these sensors and lights and everything I’m wondering how much of a pain it will be. Overall Im just looking for any sort of opinions or advice from someone who has had this problem before or something similar. Thank yall!

I replaced the center portion of my rear bumper when my truck was 2 months old. This link was helpful. Post #22 has a good writeup and post #5 has an exploded view of parts.

Get your or the other person's insurance involved. If that's not an option, then hope for no frame damage and install an aftermarket rear steel bumper like you mentioned. That's what I would do.

It was an accident that happened on our farm with family and we figured it up and the insurance would cost more than just replacing the bumper, we don’t think it caused too much damage it wasn’t a very hard hit, but the plastic just busted. It’s still drivable but it’s my first truck and I want it to look nice Thank you for your advice though, I appreciate it!

    Welcome to TW!
I just gave someone my old chrome caps to my bumper (I messed up one corner pretty bad). If you put out a wanted post on your local regional TW page, someone may have the parts you need. It isn’t too hard to replace the parts, trick is removing the clips that hold the caps on. I had to use some zip ties on the back though because the main plastic mounts for the cap were broken. Nobody would know the difference though.

What ever you do repair it correctly don’t HA fix it. If you don’t do it correctly you will have a HA repair that you will see every time you look at it.

I agree with Superdave1.0 get insurance involved and have it professionally repaired.

I used this guide when I did mine. Both ends at different times! On one, I had to straighten out the cheap steel backing. It's not perfect, but you can't see it from 10 paces. Watch out on the plastic tabs on the center cover. They break easy. If you break too many, good adhesive is your friend.

Well, since you have the chrome bumper ends you do not have the Blind Spot Monitoring sensors which are expensive to work with and most steel bumpers delete this feature anyway. So, the only thing special are the four backup sensors, which can be finicky to remove and reinstall - I have broken one in the past. This sounds like a farm vehicle which in time will take lots of abuse (use) so your thoughts about the steel bumper is well thought out. What you fix today with the stock bumper may only have to be repeated in the future.
