TPMS going out?

The wife and I are on day 2 of our 5th wedding anniversary here in gorgeous Turquoise Lake Colorado and right before we got here a tire pressure warning light popped up. I switched to the tire pressure readout and all 4 tires were dashes.
With us being on vacation I haven't had a chance to pull any codes or talk to a SME yet.

We let the truck set overnight and started it up the next morning with 0 warning lights......but not more than 10 miles down the road the same pressure warning light came on and once again, all 4 tires had no PSI readings only dashes.

Any ideas on what might be going out here?

 

Have you tried pushing the reset button in the lower left side of dash below the steering wheel? Very small black button. You need to drive for a couple miles afterward and the TPMS should read out properly. If the warning lights keep coming on, you may need to replace the monitors in your tires.

 

maybe a bad sensor...it should have a code...

 

It's strange, I've had many TPMS sensors go out, but never ever had all 4 go out at the very same time.

I tried the TPMS reset button, but since the warning light is on and has remained on, I never saw anything flash, so not sure it took. So far nothing has changed.

 

I would definitely have pulled the code if I could, but being 700 miles from home on vacation that is something I haven't done yet.

Im just not sure how any one bad sensor could make all 4 go out at the exact same time.

 

There's something else going on. They all won't go out after 4 years at the same time.

 

My thinking as well, I just don't know what.

 

Any auto parts store should be able to read codes for you...only takes a minute.

 

Yep, for sure, but being 12,000 feet up in the Rockies there really aren't any auto parts stores close.

 

I saw that you were on vacation and assumed you may not be near civilization. Just commenting, I guess that when you do go through a town...

 

Maybe the elevation has something to do with it. When you get back to "civilization" pump them up to 36~37 PSI & see if it goes back to normal.

 

Change of altitude??? Air pressure will change at altitude. Are you checking manually with a gauge?

I guess a lot of people like the TPMS sensors. I can't think of a less valuable technology on the entire truck. The benefit to expense ratio makes them not worth having to me. First thing I did when I put tires on was take the silly things out and put a sticker over the light.

Probably a good idea, as I do have an old fashioned digital pressure gauge with me.

It's not so much that I can't live without TPMS, it just drives my OCD crazy to have something wrong, and have that warning light blaring at me.

 

It's the change in altitude. Mine did the same on a trip to the Sierra's. Don't worry. Enjoy your vacation. You may have to set the reset button once you get to lower elevations

 

No, of course not. lol, now if that had happened I really would have been worried!

 

Put a piece of tape over the icon. I did that for over a year.

 

i always have one of these, the tpms is just a toy to play with,
do you watch the DTE or the fuel gauge to monitor your gas ?

 

yep if it gets to you just take vacations close to dealerships

 

I don't want to hijack the thread, but my question is along the same vein. I'm thinking about buying some 16-inch TRD Pro wheels. How much trouble is it to swap the sensors from one wheel to another?
