What made them hard to put in the housing?

The threaded diameter was smaller than the hole in the headlight reflector, if I recall.

Sorry I didn't update but these are sold.

I've done quite a few of these retrofits and the thread is supposed to be smaller (significantly).

There should be a silicone spacer (ring) that sits snug between the stock headlight reflector and the new projector. Once snugged down it won't move.

This gap is intentional and allows for you to move the projector around to aim it properly. It doesn't get any easier than the threaded shaft method.

The MLED projector will work on our 2nd gens, more so the 12-15 models? Is there plenty of room in the reflector bowl?

I’m trying to decide between the D2S 5.0 with 55w ballast or the MLED projectors.

Not to highjack a dead thread (they sold anyway) but I'm looking more into the MLED projectors. Less wires, no warm up, more reliable, etc. However, they might not be AS bright lol

Thats what I’m afraid of but on TRS site, they claim it’s brighter than the 5.0’s wirh CBI bulbs at 50w. I have LED projectors now, they’re good but used to have a TL with clear lenses and CBI bulbs and I was impressed.

The mled are nice, but what you've mentioned is not always the case.

The problem with leds is if they fail, overheat, or a fan fails or something you have to basically open up your headlights and start over from scratch. It could also leave you driving with a light out for a long time.

This is especially true for people that don't do the work themselves, or people that might live in a cold climate. Working outside in the winter sucks!

With hid, almost all of the electrical components are plug and play and can be replaced in a matter of seconds (without removing light housing from the truck)

You get the added bonus of better width and light pattern as well, and can change the temperature of the bulbs to match your other lighting (for those of you that like matching light bars etc)

With led, the color you get is the color you get... No changing bulbs.

Yes, mleds are a cleaner install (no ballast to hide) but honestly the wiring harnesses are almost the exact same and there's so much room to hide ballasts in the tacoma engine bay.. It's hardly an issue.

Not trying to sway you either way, and I may go led next...but I do retrofits more or less as a hobby so I don't mind cracking open a lens when they fail.

My advice for 1st timers is go with a good hid kit. Then if you enjoyed the work (not just the results), consider led next time.

Don't be surprised if when you do go LED you wished you went with HID. But until you try both, you won't know the difference.

If you have auxiliary lighting like tegotaco does, it won't really matter if your mleds don't have the same spread as the d2s 5.0s, because his light bars make up for it :D

Also, the color change during bulb warmup on hid is just super cool!

I'm just rocking the Mini H1's. I've had them for a few years now. I need something hot for the winter time to melt the ice and snow off of my headlights. I'd love to upgrade to D2S's but I don't have the budget or time to build another set of retrofit's right now. Plus, mine still work fine.

That is something I did notice with my LED retros. Little to no heat.
