Manual Transmission needs Replaced

BTW, I fixed my post, I meant to say "isn't enough to lose sleep", but my brain goes faster than the typing hands, so sometimes words are skipped.

 

Every manual I've had (Mazda, Isuzu, Nissan x2, Audi, Honda, Subaru, BMW, and now Toyota) has done that, especially if you've had it in neutral AND had the clutch in. Just release the clutch for a second to get things spinning, push the clutch back in, and then it will slot into first perfectly.

 

It’s weird because none of them have done that for me (except the Tacoma), even the Aisin 5 speed in my jeep. My Frontier and Ranger never did nor did the Jeep. Odd.

 

I agree, I think you get into a routine with shifting a manual transmission, from my experience they’re all a little different and require some getting used to

 

True, after 2 weeks (driving mostly weekends), I'm starting to get used to shift from 1st to 2nd.

My 2012 Xterra had a smaller gap between 1st and 2nd, not by much:
Xterra: 1st: 4.37 2nd: 2.52 delta: 42%
Tacoma: 1st: 4.784 2nd: 2.423 delta: 49%

It's not that big a difference, but combined with the rev hang, it takes getting used to.

I do like having a lower 1st gear though, a more even spread between gears would be nice. Easier to accomplish if there wasn't 2 overdrive. My previous 6 speed only had one overdrive, so that's more lower gears to spread evenly.

 

Overall does your Tacoma feel more powerful/zippy than the Xterra did? I LOVED my manual Frontier. The way it drove was way better than my 3rd gen, but I had to get rid of the truck due to other issues with it, mostly PO related. If the new Tacoma drives even better than that did, that would be nice. The TQ/HP numbers are better, but of course it comes down to how it actually delivers it.

I'm not a fan of dual OD either, it's ultimately a waste of a gear. I like 5th to be 1:1 and then 6th to be a tall OD. That way when gearing it, you can go low on the axle gears and then have a very powerful downshift by dropping only 1 gear. Sadly we don't get single OD transmissions these days.

Memory not clear, drove a Sierra for 6 years between now and then. I think the Tacoma feels peppier than the X, especially after the turbo lag. One thing to keep in mind, the X had higher rearend 3.69 versus 4.30 with the Taco. So maybe the combined final drive ratio is not that far off, except for the gap between 1st and 2nd.

 

The X/Frontier are somewhat close in final drive to a 3rd gen, not really with the 4th gen. I went straight to the Tacoma from the Frontier and so I had a very good direct comparison. To me, the frontier was much better despite the final ratios not being all that much different. My perfect stock setup would be mixing and matching a few ratios from each and then putting them behind the frontier engine with the Tacoma rear end. Oh well.

 

Yeah, this is an engine/transmission combo that absolutely does not like to be rushed. The slower and more deliberate your shifts are, the happier it is.

And I've said it before but it bears repeating: This transmission would be a billion times better if first was just a little bit taller and second was just a little bit shorter. But it is what it is and it's not like you have a lot of trucks to choose from if you want a manual.

Well at least no one can steal it cus its a manual, oh and manual transmissions are super reliable

Anecdotal, but on my C5 I swapped out the shift assembly for a C6. I put everything together and went on my way. Turns out I didn’t torque one of the bolts correctly and ended up losing 2-4-6 when the shifter moved slightly relative to the linkage.

I have to believe it’s something equivalent that got loose and lost alignment.

T-SB-0058-24 (attached) released to address this issue. It looks like the shift extension housing is cracking on the front side below the shift selection rod:





I have no idea why they're replacing the entire transmission for this and not only the shifter housing. Seems oddly wasteful unless they are concerned about some secondary damage to the synchros/gears/etc. that may have been caused by poor/incomplete shifts as a result.

Either way, the TSB now exists, and the fix is a transmission replacement.

If someone wants to fix this down the line (out of warranty, etc.), the housing is 33570-04010 and the gasket is 33584-0K010. This part doesn't exist on the 2016-2023.

Excellent information! Thanks for confirming that I am 100% safe with installing one in my old gen.

 

Looking at this a bit more, I wonder why that is causing problems. Hard not to wonder if maybe the collar on the rod slammed into the housing and causes the crack to begin with? Still, don't see how this would affect 2/4/6, I get that the rod moves in the forward direction for those shifts, but I don't know what the crack would do to cause the inability to select those gears?

I too am puzzled about why they’d replace the whole transmission as a fix - and unless parts are redesigned, I’m curious how this fixes the issue?
