Where along I5? In/around seattle? It's a out of a horror movie. In CA? Well, shit, everything west of I5 in CA is a shitshow.

I've been the entire length, CA being the absolute worst especially with the 55 speed limit for trucks and any trailers.

Gotta agree about 81, I spent a lot of time on that road.

try I-5 in the seattle area. you'll wish you never did. its horrid. you literally could ride a 1speed bike faster without effort.just for a couple miles though. from north california to canada.

well, thanks for the adjustment. shows you've been through that experience. you literally could drive a tractor with a brush hog in the ditch faster than traffic. for hundreds of miles! reason i moved farther west.

And yet you seem proud of that.

Much more important than the number on the bag is the formulation of the nutrients inside it. Much more important than the fact there is 19% nitrogen is what formulation that nitrogen comes in.

It's often said that "Ignorance is Bliss", but that is not really true.

    Innocence is Bliss!

I looked at a 2004 23hp New Holland last night. $1k cheaper than the Kubota I thought I was going to buy. It seemed solid, but rough. Some homemade fixes; one thing was curious - the owner said the bucket was too-big; as if somebody installed a larger than factory bucket on the FEL. He said "Even with water in the tires, a full bucket of gravel makes it go up a little on its front wheels." I don't want balance issues.

Tonite I'm going to try and see a 2019 23hp MF with FEL with skid-steer type quick release, and Box Blade. It will need new front tires, says the owner, but here goes. Fingers-crossed.

Add to that 'It (outcomes, bad news, etc) only hurts if you care', or with better grammar: "It hurts only if you care" :)

    On the "bounce".........

Any "strong" tractor will do this. If its got strong hydros... then its gonna lift more than its balance is set up for. That's just how it is. It's up to you to find the weight/balance set up. Usually what you find is that tiny tractors cant lift much, so its not a real problem. They bend first.

KR can chime in with this as well cause we have similar tractors. My tractor has a 650lb counter weight in the back, plus 350lbs in the rear tires. That's right at 1000lb of extra weight back there.

I can still bounce the wheels because it has a really strong hydro pump & lifts a LOT of weight for its weight. With about 2000 lbs in the front bucket I can dribble like its a basketball if I want to...... knowing your machine is everything. That only comes with usage & common sense.

Grew up on Ford tractors. OLD Ford tractors. They were the stuff in their day. Now days?
Like most other tractors they usually don't have enough hydro power for their size.

Like you, I'm new to tractors also. I just bought what I think is one of the larger models in the range of Kubota compacts (L3901) in March. My land is mostly hard, and tends to be bumpy because much of it was horse pastures for decades past. The horses really packed it down solid. My larger compact tractor is still bouncy with weight in the bucket. I don't have any added weight on the rear, or water in the tires. When you travel, be sure to keep the bucket LOW to help avoid any serious fubars. Also the quick release you mentioned is a good thing to have. This was pointed out to me in this thread when I was tractor shopping.

So since you deep south and not much freeze you could put beet juice in rear tires for balast or RV antifreeze.

I suppose I expect a tractor to drive okay/just fine with a bucket full of gravel. I know there are variables, but I suppose if I scoop a scoop of something that needs scoopin' and carry it across the yard reasonably (1-2' off the ground), it shouldn't necessarily be a little precarious - which is the message i got from the guy last night and his BBT (Big Bucket Tractor). :)

We did get a few days in the low teens this past winter. Global warming, ya' know.
But I wouldn't know how to put WATER in the tires, much less beet juice or antifreeze.
And what stops the wheel from rusting??

I used a 12V pump and a bucket, poured the 1 gallon jugs into a 5 gallon bucket. They make a special fitting to let fluid in and air out. If you're concerned with rust you can put tubes in then fill.
