After getting back from a drive on the beach this afternoon I noticed a lot of noise coming from the rear brakes. When I parked in the driveway (kind of a steep hill but not steep enough that I would normally worry about the parking brake) the truck rolled forward onto the park pin even though the parking brake was fully engaged. I put the truck in neutral and it rolled down the hill with only the slightest resistance even though the e brake was pulled all the way up. As far as I can tell there is plenty of resistance on the parking brake handle as well as the brake pedal so the only conclusion I could come up with is sand in the drums but I am not sure whether that would cause a nearly complete loss of brake power.

Maybe got some sand in your drum. I would take a look at that first.

Check the lines to the rear brakes for any leaks. If possible lift the rear pull the drums off to physically look at the pads . How many miles on the truck ? Maybe the pads are worn down to metal .

You need to adjust the rear brakes.
This is more common than you would think.
Toyotas auto adjusters on these truck doesn't do a very good job.
You really do need to adjust them manually from time to time. (about once a year for me)
You'll notice a big difference in brake performance and holding capacity.

That coupled with his report of noise and recent beach driving. I bet sand in the drums. Guessing that doesn't help with stopping force :D

Probably not. Either way, the drums need to come off.
Compressed air and a couple cans of brake clean should help.

42,000 miles on the truck, never touched the brakes or adjusted them manually.

I ran about 5 hours in the sand dunes a few weeks ago and had no issues. Is this a common issue?

Driving on a beach? I’d also rinse the heck out of everything underneath it including the brake parts or just wait till the ferric oxide party starts!

I believe the car wash that I go through does the undercarriage. But I’ll give it a good look over just to see.

I agree with statements above. They’re probably just out of adjustment. Clean and adjust and you’re done. Also, Do you regularly use the emergency brake?
