child seat in access cab?

My son will be born in the next 5 months and im just curious if anyone puts thier baby seats in the back of the cab or turns off the airbag and puts it in the front. I see there is a place to strap in a carseat in the back it just seems like it will be a little cramped...If I would have known I was having a kid when I bought the truck I would have gotten a dclb ...thanks for any input

Op: I would not be scared of putting a child on the rear seat since it is written in the manual you can do so. There is all the necessary hardware and the governement authorities would not let toyota sell the truck if it was detrimental to a child security/not usable.

 

I agree with supralight, read that thread though it has some pointers to make it easier to install, plus I think Toyota has a pad or something too, but check it out it will help. If worst comes to worst I would take it to your local police and they should have someone who installs them for people, maybe they have experience with the access cab

 

You shouldnt install a car seat in an access cab. Anyone trained in car seat installation at your local police will advise you not to install it. Not safe, not a real seat or a real door.

 

sometimes thats all you can do though...what if you have a single cab truck? you put the seat up front with you...

 

^ lol no kidding, My wife use to have a mustang and we had the infant seat in the back of that. It had the seat hooks and everything.

It wasnt comfortable for the front passenger but it got us by untill we got her a new car

 

A rear facing seat takes up a lot of room but it can fit in an access cab. I had to take my son in my access cab a few times when he was still in his rear facing seat. The wife had to pull her seat up....tight but doable.

As for safety, there are child seat anchors on the passenger side so any child seat can be installed correctly and safely. Most fire stations have trained people to help you install them if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Once your kid moves to a forward facing seat there is a LOT more room.

 

Rear seat is always the best place, but......With the airbag off, the front seat is doable. I had my first boy in the front of my 90 DLX. Not illegal, just not the best place. I had a psycho mom confront me once outside of shoprite about it. Fun shit!!

Upgraded to the DC though, needed to fit more kids. God I wish I could still put them in the bed at times

Actually the center seat in rear is the safest spot structurally in your truck. Roll over and side impact accident you have the most protection. Head on impact doesnt matter what seat your in

 

did it for years in a 1992 extended cab Toyota truck. It was a pain but it can be done and done safely.

i had my son in the front seat with the bag turned off. Cop pulled me over in the carpool lane cause he didn't see my son, when he got the front in looked in and said, sorry have a nice day. my son is big enough to face forward so he sits in the back facing forward. they don't stay small for long so not a big deal, until you have two of the little shits

 

Depending on the year of the truck, its possible but its gonna be tight. In my 2011 it would have to go in the front seat because the 2011 AC rear seats have that goofy center console in the back in lieu of a full fold down platform. The LACTH Anchors in the 2011 are only located in the front passenger seat and the left rear small seat behind the driver. When the child's seat is installed in the rear I have to move the driver's seat too far forward to even get in the truck. Fortunately my youngest is now just in the booster style seat. A full blown infant carrier with base would not work in my 2011 AC. Good luck.
