This info will probably set off a bunch of folk, but the testing is excellent and independent. I knew the OEM filter was pretty cheap and had poor filtration ratings but I never imagined it was this bad. These guys actually perform oil filter test to ISO standards vs just cutting up them open and guessing what’s up. The Denso is dead last in filtration ratings. Kind of shocking. I’ve done some research and although Denso doesn’t publish the micron rating a lot of people say it’s only 50 to 60% efficient at 20 µm. This appears to be quite true…

I think most people overthink filters just change your oil on or before recommended intervals use a quality oil with an OEM filter.

It's been 4.2 seconds since the last oil thread. I was beginning to get a bit concerned.

Capacity and flow vs filtration. Assuming filtration meets minimum specs, what's the problem?

Yup. This is like putting a super high MERV rated air filter on your home furnace - sure it filters better but it doesn't matter when your air handler burns out due to too much resistance

    minor tweaks
With all the attention oil and oil filters get on here you'd think these engines have lubrication problems.

The point of this post is to recognize that there are much better options for $5 to $10 more. I like using the best, or close to it, but I’m an enthusiast and I’m sure many don’t really care. For those that do, excellent data.

I guess, the OEM filter ranked worst of all the filters tested. Filtering particulates is actually quite important. If this data does not change one’s opinion, probably nothing will. Old dogs, new tricks…

Do you run speed range ZR (168mph) or load range F (96psi, 12 ply) on your tacoma? Likely not. Why? Because you don't need it.

Toyota is known for its reliability, you think an oil filter micron rating video knows better than them?

As Taryl Fixes All says, it ain't the space shuttle!

    Edit
Look at oil flow. If oil flow is too low, truck will open the by-pass valve, and completely unfiltered oil will go into the engine. So lower filtration levels and no uncleaned by-passsed oil going into the engine, or better filtration, and more often activated bypass valve dumping dirty oil back into the engine?

What is interesting is that Mobile, Wix, Napa (made by Wix) are rated nearly as low on filtration as OEM.
Yet all 3 are highly regarded on BITOG.

The Tacoma engine is not a race engine! It doesn’t need anymore filtration than what the Toyota engineers designed in the OEM filter.

There is a lot of confirmation bias you have to overcome with these threads.

There is a utuber I saw a year or two ago. City Wrencher, I believe. As part of his oil filter reviews, he puts the filtering media under a microscope. The Denso filter he sampled had rather large porous gaps. So, I’m not too surprised it came last in this test.
