Do you the V6 and A750 trans. Your profile doesn't include that info. The fact that is was working at all make me wonder if you pulled the overflow plug instead of the drain plug. This would result in only a loss of a little more than 1 quart and still result in the issues you are seeing?

The drain plug is hex, the overflow is 5 mm allen key

I hope it all turns out o.k, the op sounds humble enough to learn from his mistakes.

Gotta bite my lip and say, I think the plandemic effected the youth more than expected. Can you imagine if all vehicles were manuals?

Yeaaaaahhhhh.......... we need to legalize pot.

And the oil/tranny fluid look different and smell different.. .. .. ..

I can still smell the gear oil in my drain pan from doing the tranny months ago

I see how people could accidentally pull the tranny drain plug - what I don't get is how they don't catch it right away when a different looking/smelling fluid comes out; that is the part that makes me sad for humanity.

I was servicing the tacoma at our auto hobby shop. The attendant was telling my he's had 3 tacoma owners dump their tranny fluid instead of the oil. None ever drove off though, seeing the color of the liquid coming out is typically the o-shit moment that clues them in. Good on the OP for not sugarcoating it, it's a mistake and we all make them.

I would suggest being more diligent about examining what came from the drain bolt you just removed.

It's really hard to believe it happens so often and a quick google search shows it's not just Toyota's.

Someone help me understand this. OP filled his already full engine with an extra 4.5 quarts of oil, and the system was actually able to accept all this oil? The dipstick wouldn’t read massively high?

^The dipstick is difficult to read with a lot of smearing along the tube walls. Probably compounded the issue.

That does not mean Toyota should act as a nanny and nudge y'all in the right direction. That is a rediculous assertion.

Learn to pay a bit more attention when working on your vehicle and these kinds of mistakes won't happen so often.

It's possible he didn't read the dipstick :notsure:

Every time a friend of mine changes his oil at my place, I gotta tell him to check the dipstick.
His response is why? I just put the required 4qt in..

But is there even room in the engine for another 4.5 qts?

OP, hopefully everything works out for you.

These situations are also good reminders to slow down and pay attention to what you're doing. If you're in a hurry and rushing, mistakes can happen. Any oil change can be delayed until there's more time to safely work on it.

    Apparently so...
Isn't the first time I have read of someone doing something like that on here...

One would hope that IF they were adding oil to the engine and it overflowed, they might realize they messed up before they started driving with a drained tranny..

Yes and a hell of a lot more. You have the whole open space around the crankshaft and the lower bores of the pistons. The big risk of overfilling is that the crankshaft will whip the oil into a froth and result in a severe drop in oil pressure. Some engines even have windage trays to isolate the oil from the spinning crankshaft throws.

If your under the truck to drain engine oil and a there's not a engine above you your doing it wrong.
