Thanks, that’s interesting. I still assume the dipstick would read way way higher than just a little above full, unless the open space in the engine widens significantly above the full line

So only the 4 cyl gen2 Tacomas had a dipstick? My 09 had one though I never owned a v6 of that year.

    I have a 2nd gen V6 - it has a dipstick . . . . .

But apparently some dipsticks don't know how to use a dipstick

Are you talking tranny or engine oil? Engine oil 2nd gen V6, definitely a dipstick. Tranny, no

Should indeed read higher since the oil level in the dipstick will mirror the oil level in the block no matter how full it is. And you are right about the space above the oil pan opening up. As long as you are just filling the oil pan where the sides are relatively vertical the level on the dipstick will rise in a close proportion to the amount of oil added. Once that amount of oil added rises above the oil pan into the block it will still rise on the dipstick but no longer be proportional to the amount added and be < amount added).

Simple analogy is a funnel. Since the walls rise outward the increase in level as fluid is added will slow based on constant input volume.

    Too few to list.
I like how you placed a percentage amount on the tranny being ok!

Some people apparently crawl under the truck from behind the front tire. I've seen this in one of Amber Dee's videos.

On TrailRecon's Youtube channel, Brad's son drained the transmission on his 2nd gen as well, documented on video.

The Automatic transmission (A750) on the 4.0 (1GR) trucks doesn't have a dipstick.
It's not as easy pulling a dipstick and checking.

As for draining the wrong pan. It happens.
I haven't done it yet. But I watched my brother drain the wrong one on his wife Nissan.
And i was right there under the car with him. Things happen.

I've made a lot mistakes. It's easy to do when your minds on other things than the task at hand.

OP is living and learning. It'll all be fine in the end.
Pick up the tools from under the truck and carry on with life.
    Don't sweat the little mistakes.

Unfortunately lots of folks don't pay attention, and no i have never made that mistake,so just saying maybe it would be better if ALL manufacturers put a metal tag on the tranny with a caution tag.You however can have your own opinion, some folks are not perfect like you seem too be.

    I make plenty of mistakes
The difference is that I own them

I once put wiper fluid in the coolant reservoir because both fluids were blue
Noticed as soon as I was done that the reservoir I filled was attached to the radiator
I learned my lesson, turkey basted it out but I didn't blame BMW for not labeling the stuff better
    Live/learn

If you aren't going to pay attention to what you are doing, that is a you problem - not a manufactuer problem

I don't get how some people want to blame their mistakes on others
It is like that subset want/need guardrails on their lives - it is depressing

Was it FWD vehicle. I can see that being maybe more common since the engine oil pan and the transmission are side by side.

On a RWD vehicle with the engine up front it should be less common since you know the transmission is always behind the engine.
Then you have mid engine vehicles where the transmission can be in front or or behind the engine.

    Yes. It was......
It's a good excuse. But I won't use it as an excuse.
We knew better, we just didn't "look".

I "try" to make myself useful if someone else is "working on stuff".
I don't like to stand around and watch them work. So I crawled under there "just incase" he needed help.
Turns out, we both needed help.....:rofl::rofl::rofl:

How dare you expect people to take accountability for their actions… if i make a mistake, its not my problem. How dare you

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
I got blowback in another thread for suggesting that it wasn't all that long ago that personal responsibility and self reliance were virtues and dare I say, almost expected of people.

Not me. I don't always make mistakes.
I have intentionally made bad decisions. Knowing the outcome would likely be "bad".
The bigger question is, can you deal with the consequences if it goes bad?

I did that just today. I had an over grown lot to mow.
Normally, I walk the lot. But I didn't feel like it today.
