As far as I'm concerned, the TPMS is a tool, nothing more and nothing less. Real men know how to use tools, right?

So now that this thread is completely off track........

Well that's me going off the Whitwell Launch site ,(Tennessee) back in the day (I'm 60 now) in my wills wing XC155.
Between 2 kids/time to get out/money/work/life. i haven't flown in years now (sad to say). Started flying in the early 90s. in Whitewater, WI and was the first group of people to do aerotowing in the midwest.
    So thanks for asking....

This one is from Lookout Mt Georgia

    At home in Omaha it's 107f w/65% humidity.....here up in the mountains it's 65f w/25% humidity.
The pines and the lake at altitude make for a gorgeous view most everywhere.

"Lookout Mountain"? Wills Wing?! Man, that's pretty fancy compared to the Bennet I used to fly in the early-mid 70's. 17' keel, 19' leading edges. Seated position. .035 or .042 Reynolds Aluminum.
I've got a couple of hundred flights off Torrey Pines and close to that off of Palomar Mountain. "Aerotowing"? If that means what I think it does, I have some stories to share. Back in those days I used to weigh 135-145lbs. Not anymore! One of the guys I used to fly with still flys out at Torrey Pines, Look up: Burke Ewing and his dog Curtis "The Worlds First Flying Dog" Burke set a number of first hangliding records in those early years. Guy was and still is a real character. I swear I could hook up and fly again. You still have your Kite?

You have entered The TPMS Zone and yes it is a individual senor problem.

I entered The Zone right after getting new tires. This was back at the beginning of the covid lock down so my truck was about 5 years old and around 120k miles. Way too early for a senor problem so I assumed they damaged one. I had no pressure display and no light during my 10 minutes ride home. An hour later going to work they all read fine. Then coming home after midnight I got the flashing light which goes to solid. It was a pretty predictable pattern for about two weeks. I bought the Autel TS508 which can read and program the sensors in the truck. They all read fine but I still programed them into the truck and all was good for about a week before going back to the flashing light routine. After awhile it wasn't routine. It would be good for days before getting the flashing light. Sometimes the light would come on solid as soon as I started the truck. When the light was solid I checked the senor and found one that didn't read so I was relieved it wasn't a central module problem.

I'm no TPMS expert but I did my own research. TW has a lot of bad information.

The flashing light is time based not milage based. I was getting the light almost in the exact spot on my comutte. I finally found written information on it and it's an odd time like 22 minutes. That happens cause the system can't verify where each sensor is on the vehicle. The system needs to verify all the sensors before it will display any pressure readings. The system reads all the sensors but just doesn't no where they are. The non display trucks probably don't have the flashing light.

Solid light at start up is it can't read all the senors. At least one can't be triggered on. Sensors go to sleep to save battery power and triggered on by the vehicle or sensing rotation.

Having the light finally stay on was a relief. I got used to it on. It's much better than having the light flashing while you are driving.

I got new tires this year. Since I had the TS508 I bought Autel sensors off Amazon for $113 for the set of 4. America's Tire installed and programed for free with the new tires. I examined the stock sensors and saw no obvious damage. Checked them with the TS508 and they ALL read fine. WTF! I didn't care. Everything is working fine now.

So I just rechecked those sensors before posting and the one I had marked does not read or can't be triggered to read. I dropped it and tried again and it read one time but I may have been too close to the others as I couldn't get it to read anymore.

I cut it open to check the battery. It's a 3v and I get 2.87v on the meter. So it'sjust not a battery going dead but somethingin the circuitry.

    20240629_172729.jpg

Oh and the TPMS reset button doesn't do shit to fix the problem. It's function is to set the minimum pressure into the system based on the current pressure readings. The information in the manual is just basic info for all toyotas and not specific for your truck. Most cars run different pressures front and back so they tell you to reset it after rotating tires and readjusting your pressures. I never do this for rotations. I run 32f and 30r. After I rotate and adjust pressures I initially see 32 in the back but within in a block or so I see them self correct.

Don't forget your spare tire carries a sensor. If the spare tire sensor is bad it will set off the warning system. Been there, done that.

Not on the 3rd gen. It can't take 5 senors.

Has a full sized spare, but the spare doesn’t have a sensor. 3rd gen ecu only holds 4 sensor IDs
What is the point of having the display for tire pressures if you don’t let the vehicle learn where the sensors are? The system isn’t constantly checking sensor position…

Interestingly enough, the 4 original on my truck went out at the same time 8yrs after purchase. Just replaced all 4 a few months ago.

It can happen, just a little odd. My sensors are 12 years old & work fine. Also odd. :)

Fair enough. Refusing to press a button for a few seconds seconds for whatever reason strikes me as obstinate, but you do you.
And why does the document you’re citing reference a compact spare? Seems like generic Toyota information for multiple models?

My 2nd generation Tacoma had a sensor on my spare. "Had" meaning I just sold my trusty 06 Tacoma Pre-Runner last week. Bought a 2024 4Runner
    primarily for the 4.0 V6

Late 2 gen tacomas only can program 4 sensors in techstream.
The rumor is some trims of 2006-2008 tacomas 5 sensors can be programmed.
Otherwise, tpms is identical between 3rd and 2nd gen

Once all 5 of my TPMS units were installed new and programmed I was good to go. I rode around for over a year with a piece of tape on the dash icon.
