Surprise arrival on Tuesday morning. Obviously she was pregnant when we got her last July. We have plenty of pasture so it's no big deal.

    Wood chippers...

I currently have a 5" 14hp Power King chipper that I bought last fall. I'm very happy with this chipper. It's run everything I've put through it up to 4-5" material. Definitely easier to chip fresh material vs old dried stuff though. Never had a jam, or stalled the engine. You have to control your rate of feed on the bigger stuff, and anything pretty much around 2.5" and under will self feed no problem.

I recently bought a Kubota BX2380, and am now considering a PTO powered chipper. I'm particularly interested in the Woodland Mills WC46. The infeed chute is lower to the ground, so it will be easier for my wife to load material in, and the hydraulic feed looks pretty nice too. I won't have to stand there and manually hold back bigger stuff to avoid a stall or jam.

Anybody have input on PTO chipper vs stand alone units?

Added a couple of pictures for you guys! The first one shows the Power King chipper next to and old MTD chipper that was basically useless.

Sure I had the WM42 version. Got a whole series on it over on the Kubota board.

Sold it last fall. Will give you totally h9onest input here.

The chipper itself is fantastic! It just absolutely eats limbs & so on. You want to avoid leaves as much as you can, cause its not a mulcher. The stuff it puts out is great for mulch or trail coverage.
We did trail coverage with ours around the property. Here's the pro's cons for you.

    Pro:
it never gets tired & the blade lasts really good even in hardwoods.
In the 500lb range it is fairly heavy duty, made with good steel.
Not very expensive for what you can do with it.

    CON:
It's very loud because you have to run at 540 PTO speed which is fairly high on your RPM.
While it says it will run on 14hp at the PTO.... It will .... It does a lot better on tractors with more & doesn't bog down.

So here's the thing for you personally: you got a nice BX & it will have enough HP at the PTO.
BUT you are gonna be running your tractor wide open. If you are one of the people who wants to "idle" a tractor & not crank her up? This machine wont work good for you. It's based on the weight of that flywheel spinning at high speed to not only chip stuff but also to keep it clear & throwing it out the chute.

Why did we sell ours: this is a factor for you to consider. My wife thought it would be great to chip up the brush, make our own trail coverings & so on. It only took a few outages of this for her to say this is too much like work. I'm hot, sweaty, its loud & I don't like it.

AND SHE NEVER TOUCHED IT AGAIN. 2 seasons of sitting on the shelf later I sold it & cleared the shelf space.

There ya go, more info than you asked for.

    Thanks for the input!

My existing chipper runs at 3600 rpm, and it's pretty damn loud too. Luckily the wife doesn't mind doing the work, it's just hard for her to get longer material into the chute cause she's a bit vertically challenged :)

Oh ok then.... We are shorty's here too.

Good thing about the 3point mount is that you set it down on the ground to steady it & the chute is at an angle. So as long as its not too heavy for her to lift? Then you stick it in & it feeds itself.

The second she sticks it in there she needs to be hands off!

For our tractor 2500rpm is 540PTO speed. but 40hp at 2500rpm is way different than a 1lunger at 3600..... You need ear pro for sure. :)

PS look into the BX42s for your tractor. That's what we had & its made for your size tractor.
    Might be cheaper too.

    Thanks for the input..much appreciated!

We just spent a few hours pulling up some very large rocks, and clearing some trees for a path with the tractor and the chipper. We definitely always wear hearing protection.

That lower chute height and hydraulic infeed on the woodland mills unit is starting to look pretty good! Will look into the other you mentioned as well.
