why not, what do you want to know

I've seen a number of mini-splits not drain correctly and damage the drywall

there is also the Home Improvement thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/home-improvement-today.12120/

Since this is a shop thread, I was considering a unit for my shop.

1500 sqft, extra insulation, but with overhead doors facing south. Gets pretty toasty in the afternoon ( about the time I feel like getting something done).

Really only need AC for the afternoons. Heat will supplement my in floor hot water system that I leave at 55* year around.

I've seen a jillion different manufacturers with a price of $500 to $4k. For a 24,000 btu unit.

I also see many used units on fbmp. This confuses me. Do they not work for fuck all and peeps just install central air?

I'm curious if the install is as simple as the vids show and if they are a true supply of ac and their longevity.

Mini splits do great for the most part. I had some guys install a no name brand 2 ton unit in my garage last year. Cost me $2400. It cools and heats great. My garage doors face west, all I did was add the radiant foil insulation. My garage sits at 69 degrees all day. It even does a good job keeping up when I have both my CNC mills running.

At the last plant I was working at we installed Samsung mini splits all over the place. Only really problems they has was when the filters were not cleaned regularly.

    This triggers a question:

This will be in my stand alone shop not attached to the house. Would it make sense to mount the fan/evaporator at a user friendly height?

I'd be genuinely irritated if I had to climb a step ladder ever 3 weeks to clean the unit.

    Yes.
But realistically you won’t have to clean the filter but every 3-6 months. I clean mine every 6 months and it is hardly dirty.

I hope that's not an issue.

I really don't need the heat part, since I already have a boiler idling along to keep things around 50*.
Just the random times when I come home and need to jack the heat quickly during the winters.

They're quite popular around here. If I had the electrical capacity I'd install one in the kitchen/dining area to help the central cool and also heat the area to reduce oil consumption.

There's a Youtuber over near Pittsburgh that has two in his large shop and apparently they do really well and was easy to install.

Shoot, I'm working that day. Building is not running so we got to repair some stuff. That and I'm collecting that sweet double time and a half :spending:

    @RustyGreen I saw this Friday, they had 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th brake lights before they were cool :burp:

When the family sells this one and the ad states "never driven over 45mph" I can vouch for that :anonymous:
