Oh no the green one was auto. I don't think you could get all that greatness in one vehicle from Toyota. The black 4runner I had was a manual, and it felt...like any other 5vz with the R150

Apparently 4x4 5spd elocked with hood scoope 4runner exist. Just probably impossible to find now. 5spd 4runners in general are hard to find I've noticed. Just way more common to have autos in them.

My single cab does not feel like your usual 4.10s. And I definitely have to go a bit higher in the rpms than I'm used to to go 70mph.

Sand Flats run was a major success. Copious amounts of fuckery were partaken in.

Red Lake Trail demanded some tolls paid.

Maybe we didn't need a chainsaw... but, it was a good thing we had a welder.

We even got people that weren't in our group out of there.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Were able to remount this dude's lower control arm bracket... was completely broke off.

They were going to probably have to leave it, get to service and call his dad, then wait for him to come from LA (6 hours) with a trailer.

Yes, my power steering was growling. (I filled, and burped it, when we got back to Coyote Lake.)

But, this is my first trip up Coyote Lake Trail gate keeper. Coyote has been on my list for a couple years now, since the last time we were there, we had to stop due to a couple broken rigs in our group. (They broke on Red Lake Trail, you have to do Red to even get to the Coyote Gate Keeper).

At 400,000 miles, it looks like my Power Steering pump, and steering rack, are giving up the ghost. Is there an upgrade on the pump, I can look in to? If I'm going to replace, I'd like to upgrade.

sadly no. No way to upgrade anything in our steering beyond what you've already done.

What about this? I wonder if anyone has any experience with this.

Wouldn't be the first time I'd be a Guinea Pig lol

***EDIT*** Basically only work with SAS.
BUT... Maybe that means only works the way we intend it to work if you're replaced with a power steering box

Yeah as you said, just for steering box. When that came out there was a bit of a storm of excitement to use it as an upgrade to our rack system but alas..no go.

I mean I know some folks did just say fuck in and install hydro rams. But thats also not street legal so you'd be converting it to a trailer princess a that point.

I would definitely add a cooler if you haven't. That'll extend it's life more and a filter.

It's too bad we can do something like 2nd/3rd gen tacomas and getting a tundra rack modified to fit. Alas, the 1st gen tundra uses the same rack our trucks do.

Anecdotally, I've observed either in the junkyard or around the forums...

Early Tacoma sometimes had 3.xx gears. We don't talk about those.

Mid-run (like 97-99) 3RZ 5MT Tacoma usually had 4.10 gears in an 8.4" open rear end.
Later (00+) 3RZ 5MT Tacoma usually had 4.30 gears in an 8.4" open rear end.
Mid/Late (97+ maybe?) 3RZ 4AT Tacoma usually had 4.56 gears in an 8.4" open rear end.
8" rear end (e-locker) were rare, if they existed at all, with the 3RZ.

5VZ Tacoma are mostly 4.10 regardless of transmission or rear end/locker.

    5VZ 4Runner are usually 4.10 (non-TRD) or 4.30 (TRD). There are definitely 4.30 e-locked 4Runners.
    3RZ 5MT 4Runner I'm not sure about, but I'd guess 4.10 or 4.30.
    3RZ 4AT 4Runner got 4.56.

All 4Runner are 8" rear, regardless of locked or open. I don't know if 3RZ 4Runner ever got lockers (I'd guess not, but Toyota did lots of things).

1st gen Tundra and Sequoia also used an 8" rear, sometimes with a factory or dealer-installed LSD, but these seem to mostly be 3.xx trucks (because v8). I think 4.10 Tundra existed but I don't know if they ever got the LSD.

So the mythical 4.56 e-locker would most likely have come in a 3RZ truck, but 3RZ trucks rarely (if ever) got e-lockers.

If you wanted to steal gears from a 4Runner (either locked or open) I think you could do so by using an 8" (e-locker) Tacoma axle with a 4Runner 3rd to save yourself the fab work. Unless the locked/non-locked 8" housings are different?

If the money's ever available, I think a Harrop e-locker is a more appealing retrofit than a Toyota e-locker if you didn't have one from the factory.

8.4 and 8'' elocker housings are different. You can modify an 8.4 to fit an elocker but not the other way around.

Tundra's also had some that came with higher ratios, I've see some guys pull 4.70 from 2wd tundras. Probably v6 ones.

And to be fair, they are all 8'' diffs, we just say 8.4'' because it's easier to talk about haha And while the 8.4 is stronger due to a few design features, it's not head and shoulders stronger.

Definietly some tacomas with 3.93s I think. Or something. Way too tall i'd say given the power. (2nd gens did come with 3.73 from factory, v6 4x4 models).

The diff bible I see is no longer online which is a shame. But wayback machine has it: https://web.archive.org/web/20190319031925/http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

There are a couple guys out there that have converted their rack to a steering box with ram assist and pitman arm. They've posted some pictures and vague info on how they did it, in some of the desert race forums. That was a while ago. I'll have to search it.

Besides. LT IFS is cooler than SA. :boink:

Do none of you guys use the gzila tool?

Makes getting the CV out super easy on the trail, without getting under the truck, or pulling skids or anything.

I assume it would work just fine with only the stub too, no matter how much you cut off. :anonymous:

Actually it is now, the legal rule for a physical connection to the steering wheel is gone, case and point... cybertruck has no physical connection between steering wheel and wheels
