My first ever trip through NYC was in a 26' Penskee truck through the heart of Brooklyn. That was NOT a fun trip at all!

Super sacks of soil for rooftop gardens in Manhattan. I would get down there about 6am and try and be out of there by 9 . They obviously used a crane to unload my trailer .

Gonna make this area into a garden

    IMG_1211.jpg

I removed a whole irrigation zone when I widened our driveway. I left 20’ of pipe buried and plugged. I’ll couple more pipe onto it and put misting heads for a small section of lawn between house and shed and zigzag right then left along driveway to irrigate garden. Hope that makes sense

I drove for CFI back in the day. Their policy was no east coast runs. But I had to go to Chicago a few times. It was bad enough. Those streets were not designed for modern tractor trailers. Really fun times. I hear they have pretty good pizza too but I wouldn’t know. I just wanted gone from there o_O

    Very true :amen:

    which reminds me...

    On The Farm with Gritto

When we slaughtered a steer for our own use, it went like this:
Shoot 'em between the eyes and cut its throat to bleed it out.
Then hook the spreader bar to the hocks, drag to a convenient tree, lift with rope and pulleys over a stout bough.
Secure the rope, then proceed with skinning and butchering.

I was too small at the time to remember, but my Mom used to tell this story of a slaughtering/butchering gone wrong:

A .22 caliber bullet is perfectly adequate to kill a steer if placed between the eyes or a little above.
Well, one time my Dad botched it when the steer tossed its head at exactly the wrong moment...
... whereupon it went berserk
It ran off and it took awhile to tire out enough that Dad could finish it.

Mom said that meat was the foulest, rankest smelling meat ever.
I don't know about that, because there was another occasion where I was directly involved

We had left the farm and Dad got a job with the PA Department of Agriculture.
My Dad purchased a farmhouse with barn and six acres, so he could be a "gentleman farmer"...
... according to my Mom :p
He couldn't just give it up completely, you know?

So he had a huge garden, planted fruit trees, and every year raised a couple beef cattle.
That six acres was good pasture with a small stream running through it.

    Okay, here's the point.
One time we slaughtered a steer which had a taste for wild garlic and onion, which abounded in that bottomland pasture.

How do I know that? (I hear you asking)
Because during the butchering, my Dad accidentally pierced a stomach.
He got a spray of green soup in his face that absolutely reeked of garlic
    And I mean reeked.

Not surprisingly, what a critter eats affects the meat.

The hamburger was merely disgusting, but the roasts were horrible.

Was it wasted or was it tolerated enough to consume?
