Still puzzling over the "mild" to "spicy" tune versions.

Q: is this only throttle position, or are there other factors that shift the torque curve upward?

I am OK with my 2023 in ECT mode, adjusting the Sx gear as required, and with stock tires and gearing for my street driving style.

I hold 1,600 rpm at 65mph on the flat, and it sticks in 6th gear OK.

Q: Do the various tunes change the shift points higher?

Just had mine tuned at Adventure Motors in KC. Highly recommend! It accelerates smoothly around town with no pedal lag, and no gear hunting on the long, hilly, highway drive home.

Here is some factual feedback from a customer who recently got OTT.

"I’m very happy with the tune I got right before my 2,000 mile 8 day round trip up to Virginia, then to blue ridge Moantain and then back home to Florida.
I put new spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, cleaned k&n filter and got the mild tune. Was consistently getting 300+ miles to the full tank. before I was seeing 240 to 260ish in premium gas. Even less on 87. New average MPG 17-18.
I logged every fill up for the whole trip. The average speed on the highway was 72 on cruise control. I’m very happy to be at this mileage again after all the weight added to the truck. It was myself with two passengers. Luggage in the back and a fridge as well.
The shift points were great in the highway never had a hunting issue. I had told Rafi I wanted to improve my range in the trips. And here are the results. Got an extra hour of drive time per tank before having to stop.
    2011 V6/ tire size 265/70r17 Falken wildpeaks
    Tire PSI set to 36"

Q: did the Mild tuning change your shift RPM points?

I drive my entirely stock 2023 in ECT mode almost exclusively around town.
    1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd occur around 2,000 rpm.
3rd to 4th is higher about 2,500 rpm.

My concern is if the Mild tune pushes the ECT shift points higher than they are stock.

Is there a way to flash OTT on your own? I ask because I had mine done back in Feb, and I've tried to contact the tuner a few times since then and I never get a response. I've had been wanting to look into custom throttle and/or shift maps, but now I'll be regearing soon to 5.29s.

My BMW tunes were locked to my VIN, so my tuner could send me all the revised files I we wanted and I could flash myself without the concern of using them for other vehicles. This worked great and I was able to dial in settings during a road trip out west.

VF Tune offers a kit for $399 for DIY.

I'm in the computer business, so this sort of thing is familiar territory.
DIY also means not have to fiddle with tuners, appointments and any difficulties that arise with the tune.

The total cost of the hardware + tune files is more than a base tune, but not by that much.

"I've tried to contact the tuner a few times since then and I never get a response."

I am willing to pay for the kit to avoid the hassles above.

It is my understand when you buy the tune files from OTT, you get everything you need.
Please correct me if I am mistaken on this.

All variants of our files have revised shift schedules. (From Lite Minus to Super Spicy) The "normal" mode shift schedules and ECT shift schedules have been revised, with the "ECT" mode having a more aggressive Sports/Tow strategy employed. The OTT "ECT" mode w/ sport settings is designed to keep the engine in the midrange RPM region under moderate pedal application. This is by design to keep the engine in the peak torque range. It's also configured with step up in throttle setting to provide the driver with a sporty feel when not towing, but allows the truck to deliver a little extra of the available engine torque available for a given pedal input; aiding in towing performance.

I suspect you'll find with our file, you'll prefer to drive every day in "normal" mode and will not need to use the "ECT" mode. Our standard shift schedule corrects the OE shift schedules quirks.

Another thing to keep in mind is the shift points are relative to pedal input. Unless you're the same with the pedal application, your shift point for a specific gear change will differ. How much difference is dependent upon how the shift schedules are configured. The point is that comparing the RPM of your driving style on the OEM calibration with someone who uses our calibration with a different driving style would likely lead you to make incorrect assumptions about how our file would work for you.

Yes, we can supply you with everything you need to tune your own vehicle and not be reliant upon the local tuning retailer. Send us an email to info@overlandtailor.com, and we can get you set up.

Thanks for the fast reply and good info.

    I'm a sedate driver... if I wanted "sporty" I would buy a Corvette :D

I'm perfectly happy at 2,000 rpm for around town driving.
I don't (yet) tow, but if I did, it seems obvious to simply lock the trans into 3rd or 4th to keep the revs up.

If midrange is 3,000 to 3,500, I'm not at all interested in running there, except on demand (ECT or lockout).
I currently use ECT because the OEM shifting is constantly hunting and is always trying to run in the tallest gear possible, right above idle.

I don't know which tune type to ask for. Lite Minus, Mild, or ??

Lite/Mild is what I'd suggest trying first. You can always drop down to Lite Minus/Lite after your initial drive.

I've tried at least 3 of the shift schedules since 2022 and happy with Version 9, Mild Drive/Spicy ECT.
