    That looks like a Mitsubishi City Multi to me on the roof.

    So unsatisfying. Go back and demand to speak to the manager, or take a ladder I guess and solve this lol.

    The one on the roof looks like a 1980s Sanyo mini-split. There are still a decent amount of those in service in my area…

    @Lt. Dangle

    @Stitchgirl90 and I tore down the 2001 Trane XE1200 3-ton A/C on our day off (Friday, June 28th), but I still have not fully recovered from working back-to-back 12-hour shifts over the weekend, and I keep forgetting to post. Here is the indoor coil…

    The Trane worked at the time it was taken out of service, but it would not hold a charge of R-22 for more than a week. It just suddenly developed a leak during the recent heat wave and the HVAC charged it to see if it would last, but it didn’t. The Trane has been replaced by a Rheem…

    @TnShooter

    This unit is easily identified as a 3-ton (36,000 BTU) by the “36” in the model number. Many HVAC manufacturers put the week and year of manufacture in the serial number (like Carrier/Bryant, Lennox, and Goodman for example), but Trane and American Standard actually have the month and year of manufacture clearly printed…

    What’s wrong with Rheem? Better than Goodman or Nordyne/Nortek!

    @Lt. Dangle

    Remember the dead 1991 Trane XE800 that I got for free earlier this year? Both the 1991 XE800 and my friend’s 2001 XE1200 were 3-ton units, but the XE800 was shorter with a much smaller footprint, and a larger compressor. The XE800 had a Climatuff recip and the XE1200 had an Alliance scroll. The indoor coil for the 1991 XE800 also seems to be larger than the XE1200’s coil. I’m confused. On another note, both were straight-cool units and NOT heat pumps, so size difference has nothing to do with that. Maybe the the larger outdoor coil is why the XE1200 has a SEER higher than the XE800 by four?!?!

    More surface area typically on the higher efficiency stuff, but other things go into it.

    As for the coil, Trane has many different sized coils like everyone else. You can get a 3.5t coil anywhere from 22" tall to over 30" tall as example. A 2t coil can range from 17.6"H to 27" H. Widths vary as well of course, although Trane is typically "B","C" and "D" width now. "A" width are all but gone from their lineup unfortunately.

    coil.png

    Here is a shot from my price book showing the various sizes of coils that have the same capacity. This is just one model of coil, Trane has several others as well.

    Honestly, it really boils down to available instal space and availability of coil at distributor. As long as they match up of course. I generally try to install whatever makes the job smoother if I am honest.

    One thing I love about Tranes is that various guts are easily accessible. For those of you who don’t much about Trane products (or HVAC period), the reversing valve would be located in here if this was a heat pump…

    Love the unions on it. Wish they all were that way.

    Brazing in a suction line while hanging over the side of a coil all while huffing the faintest whiff of Phosgene gas is why I can't remember half the things I think I do.

    I thought Phosgene gas was immediately fatal if you breathed it in...?

    It's not usually immediately fatal. Symptom lag times are usually 12-24 hours later.

    It's also heavier than air. So it sink. Remember this in the future.

    "Lethal dose of phosgene in humans is approximately 500 ppm/min of exposure or exposure at 3 ppm for 170 min is equally as fatal as exposure at 30 ppm for 17 min.

    I scored what I believe to be the remains of a rooftop heat pump from an RV on my way to work the other day. The compressor seen in the pictures here is an AE compressor from a 1978 JCPenney-branded Gibson window A/C…
