I think you are being optimistic.

I think by fall when Toyota releases the new colors and such for 2025, if this incident is all we’ve heard about, then it’s a non issue.

Well, one is a non-issue. And that's where it's at.

Instead of just sending in some PR hack, a senior engineer for one of the largest & well-respected car companies personally humbles himself in front of a random YouTube content creator over what is likely an isolated part failure. And also details their elaborate internal process to correct it.

And that’s why, despite my criticism of Gen4, my next truck will probably be yet another Toyota.

I thought we learned via SavageGeese that Sheldon mentioned the TFL guys had it in snow mode or something of the sort and the wheels spun and grenaded the internals. Part of the fix was idiot-proofing the algorithms so the computers won’t let the wheels spin no matter what the mode. Here’s the link I’m recalling below, though my memory is that the video doesn’t have much in it worth watching, unfortunately, unless you’re obsessed with how TFL screwed up a Tacoma and has made a bazillion videos and earned tens of thousands of dollars of your ad clicks AND can’t help but hunt down every whisper of “the story.”

@Vitamins — eww. Three lightbulbs in Texas just went out because of the power you used to make the poor AI robot watch the TFL video. Think of that poor robot! Where do those AI robots live, anyway, India? They type so fast with their cute little mechanical fingers!

I don't get it - I usually shift 1 gear at a time. Why would you go from 5th to "3rd"? Wouldn't pulling it back from 5 to 4 at 60 mph demonstrate the rev matching in a more realistic way?

Because they are YouTubers. I still think he missed 3rd and tried to jam it into first.

Country road and only a short section to pass driving about 80 km/h, go from 5th to 3rd and gun it. I often do 6 to 4 when I slow down off the highway and 4 to 6 when I've accelerated at highway speed in 4th and shift directly to 6th, no advantage to pass by the 5th gear.

My 3G auto does that rapidly going up long hills/mountains. My head snaps back and forth like I am on a mechanical bull while I keep asking it the same question. Primary reason I can't wait to get my 4G.

Used it 3 or 4 times this weekend. I have a really steep hill at the camp, easier in low range.

    Yes.

The all of it illustrates transparency and being responsive to customers which is quote unlike much of the auto industry's history.

    Yes.

40k new Tacomas in the wild is infinitely more testing and data a team of engineers can go through in a few years of development. As the model years progress, they will be built with fixes, and improvements.

Not that I do any off roading at all. So you cant use 4lo and diff lock at the same time. I did watch all these videos but maybe my 4wd knowledge is sub par. And for the person who is gonna say why don't you just get a 2wd they stopped 2wd in Canada in 18

I would think the engineer had a lawyer sitting nearby off camera, along with HR, holding his retirement package in hand, in case he went off of script.

That's not true. You can't engage the lock other than in 4Lo.

You should probably find a dirt road and run it in 4lo for a few miles every month, with the diff lock for a bit as well. Just to make sure everything works in case you ever do need it.
