I just did my first oil change on my 2nd gen. I had the truck parked about 3 hours after I last used it.

When I took the oil filter off, there was no oil in it. It was an AC Delco filter. Is that normal?

I would suspect oil would drain out of the filter if the engine was left off for that long. Personally, I always change my oil right after driving it, to get the oil hot and flowing just before undoing the drain plug...and even then, not a lot of oil is left in the filter.

I was thinking that could be it. When I change the oil in my wife's Subaru, the filter is in the same general location and usually get a little spillage.

I usually change mine after it's sat over night. Sometimes there's oil in the filter, sometimes there isn't. It just depends how good the anti drain back flap in your filter is. Don't sweat it.

Thanks, guys. I feel better now. Gotta say, it was the easiest vehicle I ever did an oil change on.

What winkel said for the drain-back valve.
Use oem filters and then you don't have to worry about that aspect.
Yes, it is a straight forward truck to work on, and the oil change is particularly easy to complete.

Yes, this is normal. I actually had this happen to me last oil change. I usually run the truck a little, shut it off and change the oil and filter. When I do this I always have some oil come out of the filter. However, last oil change the truck sat overnight and I didnt warm it up before the oil change. Because I let it sit for so long the oil drained back down out of the filter. When I removed the filter I didnt have any oil come out at all. Just to add that I always use OEM Toyota oil filters.

I actually used a Mobil One filter. The previous owner used the AC Delco.

Assuming you have the V6, there is a drain nipple on the filter mount and there may be a rubber plug on that nipple. When I change my oil right after driving, I remove that plug and squeeze a used empty plastic water bottle underneath the nipple to catch any drip off. I usually get at least a few tablespoons of oil that drains out of the filter.

Stalk the Toyota sales and get OEM by the case. Peace of mind and it can drop the price per change.

Spot on on this being the easiest oil change

Well, this is not encouraging … the anti drain valve is supposed to hold oil in the filter, when installed inverted as in our V6 engine, to prevent dry start-ups. Most of us change the oil on a warmed-up engine so we wont notice the failure of the anti drain valve. I think I will now change my oil on a cold engine, but warm day, to see what the failure rate is of the anti drain valve.

A 20 oz coke bottle fits perfectly under the drain nipple. You can move the neck around the oil drain and rest the bottom of the bottle on the hoses underneath. I generally get a couple of ozs every time I change the filter.

No problemo. But OEM filters all day, every day. $.02.

I see a lot of you guys recommending the OEM filter. I don't disagree, even though I used the Mobil 1, but are is the OEM that much better?

The 90915-YZZD3 OEM filter is just a good value with proven reliability, assuming you are buying authentic ones and not Amazon fakes. It does not filter as finely as other higher end filters, and can cost between $5-$7 so not as cheap as a $3 budget one, but is Goldilocks just right for most people.

Honestly I have almost always used a WIX filter. My truck has 232k + miles on it... engine purrs....
