So i took my truck in for service and they told me I had a power steering pump leak. After i posted it here it appears it is actually a timing cover leak. The truck is still under warranty for a couple more weeks. Even though the leak has never been an issue (and might never be) I feel like I should get it repaired. However some say that getting it repaired might cause more problems so should I get it fixed or risk having to pay to fix it later?

If you do decide to fix, maybe consider taking it to a shop that doesn’t confuse a power steering fluid leak with an oil leak. It’s a big job and that initial whiff doesn’t exactly instill great confidence.

A front timing cover leak is 20+ hours to repair, damn right you should use your warranty.

I’d Definitely get it fixed. Life changes, what if you need to sell it? Upon inspection, you’ll be offered thousands less.
You could also ask for a document that explains the warranty on the fix.

So, my 2023 w/2,000 miles had a leak. The master mechanic ended up pulling the steering rack instead of the motor or trans. He said he's done several and found a way to do like this that's easier and saves some time. So far, 2500 miles later, so good.

I had mine done using extended warranty. Got at it from underneath. $3100 in warranty dollars.

If you have the warranty. Use it. Unless you want to drop a lot of money down the road to fix it

Had mine done under warranty at 77k. Just hit 106k this morning, still dry as a bone. Personally if it leaks again I'm just going to RTV it from the outside. Some other members have done that with relative success. Warranty bill was 5k and had a loaner Tacoma for a week. rather not pay that out of pocket. Most dealerships have done enough at this point to be pretty good at it now so just get it fixed.

Truck has warranty - you'd be crazy not to get this fixed

No warranty - weep away timing chain cover, weep away!

Update: just got back from a further inspection from the dealer. Upon initial inspection by the head technician, they said they were sure it was the power steering pump. I paid for a further diagnosis. Diagnosis reveals steering rack leaking (already known) also contaminated the power steering system with metal and damaged the pump and the whole system needs replacement to fix the leaks. Total cost would be $4600. I told them I could buy a lot of power steering fluid for that much and that i’m gonna let it leak.

So i guess it wasn’t the timing cover (even though it sure looks like it) unless i want to go to the next dealership 2 hrs away and have them look at it

Thats a crock. How would a leaking power steering pump cause contamination unless the pump constantly runs dry. Hopefully it is just the pump but I've seen a lot of techs replace the pump and when its out suddenly see how bad the cover leak is.

Nah because it’s under the 3 year bumper to bumper which expired about 2 years ago because the truck aged out. Still under the 36k mileage but toyota probably wont make an exception
