Is it just me...?

I agree there's not that much difference between 2.5 & 3rd gens, really, I just prefer the bigger 4.0L motor, even though it is detuned (by Toyota) & produces much less power than it is theoretically capable of. There's a reason they are still selling the current-generation 2024 4runners with that 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE, 2nd version of it with 270 HP output.) Not sure why they felt the need to delete the 4.0L V6 from the 3rd gen Taco.

I have a 2.5 gen (2014) and it has no active-interference roadway safety features such as lane-keeping, "collision avoidance braking," rear bumper radars for backward visibility etc.

I don't have too much problem with those features per se; what I dislike is the excessive cost they bring when they are damaged in very minor bumper-thumper impacts.

The 2.5gen does have an annoying SAIS system (emissions-related) but those who are interested can.. ameliorate that issue.. without too much trouble.

I sure do enjoy changing the oil filter right up at the top of the engine bay in my 2.5gen rather than messing around under the engine.

Ok.. Take your pick... Not even 5 minutes on autotrader you can show that there is a world where 2nd and 3rd gens are going for the same price.

One of the 3rd gens is advertised as a prior fleet vehicle, lowering the value. In addition (could be showing different on my side) the second gens appear to be listed for over $5k-6k less. Sorry if I’m incorrect, viewing from my phone at work.

Edit: Im totally wrong for sure, will update when I get home. Still appears the 3rd gen is being advertised as a fleet vehicle, though.

 

I'm just here to ruffle your feathers. The 2nd gen trucks still pull in a ton of money. They're just as capable as the third gens. The 3rd gen definitely sold a ton more trucks, it brought the tacoma to the status it is today.

Well I had a random acquaintance call me asking about Tacomas because he is plaining on buying one to last through out retirement. He's retiring in 3 years. Told him to stay with the 2nd gens.

 

You see many 3rd gen’s with over 300k? Where? I looked at all of YouTube and I only saw 1 with over 300k.

 

I know of 2 where I live, and was able to find quite a few examples after 3 minutes of searching. Ill even toss in a 4 cylinder for shits and giggles.

2nd Gen is meh.

 

The oldest 3rd gen is under 9 years old... most people don't drive 35K+ miles a year.

 

I like the 3rd gen’s but I feel like every generation the reliability goes down because of more tech and moving parts added to the engine and truck. Feel like the 1st gen is more reliable than 2nd and 2nd gen more reliable than the 3rd gen. I’m sure the turbo charged 4th gen will have problems just like the new Tundras are having and the 3rd gen will be the truck to have compared to the 4th gen in reliability also.

 

Probably, I really was hoping the 4th gen launch would go nice and smooth, especially considering the new powertrain being much more friendly to drive.

 

Because many, including myself think the 2nd gen is better designed, has a better trans and doesn't gear hunt, easier to work on, to some the simpler design is considered more reliable.

Also, just because the 2nd gen is older does not mean it will have a shorter life.

I wanted another 2nd gen due to everyone complaining about the 3rd gen’s.
The 2nd gens here in Vermont have more rust than I wanted deal with. This is why I got rid of my 12.
Been happy with my 3rd gen no issues yet!

Yea no, the newest 2nd gens are 10 years old. They will have old car shit that won't last past "retirement".

 

Well they are easier to work on, less known issues, no oil starvation, the oil filter is up top, no gear hunting, no universal trans issues. The 4.0 is overall just better. But it's ok you believe whatever you want. I have 25 year old cars that run great. 10 years is nothing for cars.

 

I’ve owned 2 1 st gens , 1 2 nd Gen ,and now 3 rd Gen
Honestly all of them have been stellar for me . I am all over the maintenance and it’s payed off . I still think Toyota makes the best stuff. As far as the Tundra situation it will get figured out .I guarantee they have people all over it now .
