Are you gonna run the Toyota genuine oil?

 

no I just use Mobil 1. I’m pretty sure my dealer also uses Mobil 1

 

I did yesterday at 1,200 miles. Will do another at 5000 to get back on schedule and stay on 5000 for the life of it.

 

What brand oil are you running?

 

Toyota 0W-20. Aka, M1 w/slightly different additives is my understanding.

 

I think I might run the Toyota oil too. Was thinking of running amsoil signature series as I understand it’s really good for turbo engines but at the same time the engine was torture tested to death by Toyota with their genuine oil

 

My uneducated opinion is I don’t think you can go wrong either. More than anything pick one and stick with it so you aren’t jacking up the additive mixture. And the most important factor is the interval. My question is more should we be doing 3,000 mile oil changes with a turbo. The thing about manufacturer recommended intervals is my understanding is they get credit for longer oil change intervals for less oil waste disposal, as well as the ability to tout a lower cost of ownership. So kind of a conflict of interest although I do feel Toyota takes reliability seriously. It just gives me pause any time there is a kick back recommending something not beneficial to customer. I am going to stick to 5,000, but debating even going to 3000.

yes, I’ll did/will be doing 500, ~2k, 5k then every 5k after

 

To really start the fireworks off here, I plan on permanently switching to M1 5W30 EP and stick to 5k. I am due to change it in about 1 k miles, but I may do it sooner as I have the next few days off.

 

Dealer told me the warranty is voided if you use oil that is not stated in owners manual

 

What does the owners manual say? What the dealer says is worthless, they barely know anything about their own veichles.

 

It says 0W-20 only except in emergency you can use 5W-20 but must convert back to 0W-20 at next oil change

 

I declare an emergency.It not like they defined what constitutes an emergency so it seems you can always run it if your “emergency” doesn’t end.

 

My truck will likely never see the dealer anyways unless (or when) there is a recall of some sort. I'll take the .0069 chance my motor blows up and they blame the oil.

 

Who would be that stupid and no you can only use it till your next oil service interval under warranty,Why would anyone want to take the risk of voiding the warranty.

 

Some are concerned about the 0 in 0w-20 being waaaay to thin. There’s reason to believe it’s that way for EPA gas mileage and not really appropriate as a long term protective oil.

 

Most new cars use this oil.Even semi trucks will start using it in 2027,Toyota has a 0W-8 that they will start using in a few years.

 

I use 5w30, right now using Penn UP I have. Once that runs out I’ll be using Rotella 5w30

 

It’s impossible that 30 weight could cause damage in any engine speed for a 20 weight. The difference is like 1.2 cSt at 100C.

By comparison, the difference between cold 0w20 and warm 0w20 is like 40+ cSt.

I’d absolutely run a 30 weight while in warranty. I’d just get my scheduled 10k oil changes, switch it out for 0w/5w30 HPL, and not tell them. They’ll never know. Meantime I get better protection from fuel dilution, a more robust oil, better HTHS and film strength, and better deposit control.
