deleting catalytic converters

For those who have deleted them on the 3.4........did it make any difference in anything......more or less...did it mess anything up? I know its not a big power changer or anything else..but I figure the truck will breathe better. I am gonna cut the section of cats out and wekd in a piece of pipe.....and get a urd o2 sensor sim for the rear sensor.

Who all has done this and what has been the outcome?

yeah... I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

 

I made a pipe with matching stock flanges and put those on instead of my cat. It pretty raspy at times. You don't really feel a difference on anything maybe loose out on top end power.

 

I have heard its a bad idea in the stock form, you lose backpressure and the motor runs worse. IIRC someone on ttora did a dyno and the truck actually lost power.

 

Yup, did it on my last truck just to see what it would do and it sucked. I had some high flow cats ready to go on so i didn't run it like that but a day or so.

 

you would only lose a relevant amount of back pressure if you cut the whole pipes way on back. as long as he's keeping the pipes he'll probably be fine. . . and the best i can answer your question OP - a friend that use to work for me has your exact truck and he cut out everything, cats, all sensors, muffler, just straight piped it. best i know he's never had a problem with it. sounds like shit, but that's just because he doesnt have a muffler haha.

same here.....they gave up emmissions testing a long time ago.

all im really going to do is replace the roughly 2 foot section of piping where the cats are....after the first sensor and before the last sensor, and then install a urd sensor sim so the readings are right. and im leaving all piping back to rear of truck the same, with my dynomax turbo muffler still there. im just trying to make sure there isnt a bottom end power loss/torque loss...stuff like that before i do it.

i figure it'll make the truck breathe a bit better, make add a lil mileage to it since there isnt gonna be any real restriction to it. i already know there will be very minimal to no power gain from it.

 

what do you mean the rear one isnt monitored? both are in line after the first sensor, but before the last one. and im sure nothing is wrong with them at all(thought a while back something was...but i doubt it now), but i kinda wanna get rid of the cats altogether since i know they are a bit restrictive.

You will lose bottom end which is what you need for the trails and mudding and it will sound like shit.

Oh and removing the cat has nothing to do with the Tacoma "breathing" as you call it...

 

not really sure how it will sound like shit........I ain't straightpiping the whole damn thing....I'm leaving my muffler on. As for "breathing" as I call it.........sucking air in and getting it out quickly.......breathing.

 

As far as bottom end goes...ill probably add a resonator in so I have no bottom end loss.

 

From what I've heard, you lost some power and gas mileage from straight piping. Might as well go for it though at least to see what it sounds like and runs like. You can always put it back on.

Most states with out emission inspection will flunk the truck on visual with no cats. Leave them on the truck may not breath well be we will.
