Mystery no crank no start left me stranded for a bit

5 years and zero issues, I could live with that.
I've got a crisp $1.00 in my pocket that says this is:
Door number 1: Some bad battery/connection issue including the aftermarket remote start thingy.
Door number 2: Flaky starter.
Door number 3: Rodent chewing on some wire.

Did your stealership add a “karr” alarm/gps or some other bullshit 95 percent of dealers do it and their techs hack up the wiring

 

Nah, that one is entirely on me. No security or alarm functionality...just remote start

Been trouble free so far.
I'm so curious to hear back from the service dept

 

Stupid question you made sure the nuts around your battery terminals were tight right, I had a similar issue once and it was caused by that

 

Yup. First things I checked out were grounds, batt terminals and to see if there were signs of rodents or anything.

Nothing obvious stands out which is why I'm so perplexed at this issue appearing over the course of a 7 hour fishing outing.

Drove about 3 hours on the freeway, arrived at the lake we were fishing and parked the truck. Came back and like magic: no crank no start no juice to anything

I had not even lost my trip mileage counters and radio presets up until then. Which are easy signs I check frequently for sign of a battery weakening or not holding charge properly

 

This is where something like Scangauge can help. Point to where the problem might be. Includes alternator voltage, battery voltage, etc.

I bought Scangauge 3 a few weeks ago so I could keep an eye on my coolant, engine oil, and transmission temperatures when off road, and when on long high elevation climbs.

 

not always, I don't know how or why, but many more modern vehicles seem to crank or only for a second on a weak battery. It was just a guess, but definitely a load test on the battery is a good place to start.

 

Totally agree...a decent OBD scanner would give me some real usable info to go off instead of my vague descriptions

Yeah, but an old VW could be push started on level ground by one person. Ask me how I know.

Used to park on an incline after the first time so I could just let gravity do the work for me.

I had an 87 camaro with the 2.8L and my starter went. I was 17 or 18 at the time and couldn't afford a starter. It was a very interesting couple months...

 

Sounds like a battery terminal had a bad connection....lack of maintenance?

Update: stealership claims I simply need a new battery.

Odd as the battery is from 11/2022

I don't know squat about automotive electrical but me thinks the problem isn't the batt

 

February 1993, Flagstaff, I had push start my 1980 VW Dasher Diesel. That took hours off my life.

 

Ask them to remove the aftermarket alarm.

 

I'll go to the shop that installed it back in 2016/17 for that.

But yeah, it's coming out

 

Losing 12 volts somewhere. Ignition switch, loose connection. Battery should be load tested.
