Hm. Where did you hear that claim? It doesn't seem to hold up.

Is California Really a High-Tax State?
    BRIEF
    Key Findings
For families of modest means, California is not a high-tax state. California taxes are close to the national average for families in the bottom 80 percent of the income scale. For the bottom 40 percent of families, California taxes are lower than states like Florida and Texas.
The highest earners usually pay higher taxes in California than elsewhere. But rich Californians’ tax rates are not much different from the tax rates that low-income families in many states have long been accustomed to paying. Sixteen states tax their poorest residents at rates higher than what California applies to its richest. Florida, Tennessee, and Texas are among those 16 states.
California’s tax system is relatively flat overall, whereas most states have highly regressive taxes that ask less of the rich than of anyone else. California’s choice to have a less regressive system largely explains why California collects more tax revenue per capita than other states without especially high tax rates for low- and middle-income families.

I’ve lived in California my entire life. All my trucks going back 40+ years required commercial plates as did my father’s trucks.

Well yeah, me too, so how does that support your untrue claim about highest taxes in the nation?

I can say that our taxes are quite high one of the highest in the nation. And if you add the cost of living to live here the overall it is probably the most expensive place to live. What you are quoting is just income taxes. Californias taxes overall are probably the highest in the nation. We have zillions of taxes here that are quite high. Our sales taxes are quite high (example - current tax of guns and ammo is 21%), property taxes are sky high (mine are close to $15,000 a year), annual car registration very high(I just paid over $1000). There are literally hundreds of taxes other states don’t have or are much lower than ours. But again cost of living and taxes, California is the most expensive place to live or within the top 3. Why do you think people and businesses are leaving this state by the thousands? People can’t afford to live here, businesses can’t afford to stay in business. Don’t know what state you are in but have you looked at the cost of housing here in California? Average home price is almost $700,000 and of course the higher price of a house the higher property taxes. I sold a rental property about 4 years ago, it was a 50 yr old 3b/2b 1100sf tract home. Sold for $1.2 million. That same house in many other states probably well under $500,000. So bottom line very high taxes, very high cost of living = prohibitively expensive to live here.

Up until the mid 1990s it was that way in MA as well. No weight tax, but you had to pay an annual registration fee and there were certain "scenic" roads that you couldn't drive on.

I expect that to be reinstated at some point given the morons running the state now.

and despite all the "people leaving" there are still hundreds of thousands people coming in each year further worsening some of the worst traffic in the country and driving up housing costs

This is senseless at its best of communifornia!
A passenger vehicle loaded more cargo than a truck that doesn’t require a commercial plate; on the other hand, a pickup truck that might only be riding by its driver is required to be registered as a commercial vehicle!
It’s not called communifornia in vain fer sure.

As a lot of members noted, it has been like this for all truck owners in CA for along time. This state will always find a way to nickle and dime us by any means necessary.
