    Hey everyone,

I am in the market for a camper shell for my 2019 crew cab taco.

I spoke with a rep over at ARE and they explained to me that one of their toppers , the CX HD, has a built in support skeleton for added support. The CX HD is rated for 550 lbs on top of the camper shell. She explained to me that most toppers only have a roof weight limit of around 250-300lbs.

I would like to eventually like to put a roof rack tent on the topper for trips.

Is this load capacity something that needs to be taken into account or will a regular topper without extra support built into it suffice.

I weight around 190 but you add the ball and chain, dog, some gear etc. It will surpass the 25–350 load limit for sure.

    Tight lines!

I can't count how many times I've waken up in the middle of the night to howling winds while camping. I know roof tents are very popular, but they seem so novelty or hipster to me (not trying to put anyone down). Being low to the ground sucks in a tent during high winds, I can't imagine it 8 ft above ground.

You're buying a camper shell, sleep in that. Maybe look into the leer 180 or snugtop hi-liner. They are slightly taller for more head space. ARE makes their version too.

I would definitely not ignore the load rating.

I have the ARE CX non-HD version and they wouldn’t even give an estimated weight capacity for the roof.

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
For anyone on a budget that wants a heavier load capacity.. buy a used Leer XR that has the raw fiberglass interior (the interior hasn't been upgraded to the glued on carpeting) then add additional fiberglass cloth/mat channels front and rear on each side.

Working with fiberglass/epoxy is relatively simple.. especially with YouTube university.
