The noise never happens in park or neutral?

In park and neutral, the idle is higher.

Is the issue only happening when stopped, with the truck idling in gear?

It makes the noise when idling in gear, and it is really bad under acceleration. It seems to plateau at speeds over 30 MPH…

    That is an odd symptom.
Weird how it's worse with the AC off.

So the problem doesn’t not occurs in park or neutral with the AC OFF?

Nope, but you can hear and feel when the A/C compressor is running, even though there is no distinctive whine. Evaporator core was replaced in September 2018, and the A/C does not work any less efficiently than it has since that was done; I would in fact say that the performs flawlessly in terms of keeping the cab cold even when it’s in the 90s.

There are no warning lights, and the noise seems to reverberate through the exhaust, like something is coming into contact with something and vibrating.

I’ve never come across an issue like this one.
I’d still start with belt removal, and starting the engine.
Then testing the AC controls. (It may throw a code. No big deal. Clear it with a scan tool)
If the issue is NOT there with the belt removed, then it’s likely a compressor issue.
If it’s still there. That’s not good.

After talking to a friend of mine who used to be a mechanic, we’ve determined that the issue is likely the alternator bearing and not the A/C…

Originally a thread called 2TR-FE whining noise at idle and under acceleration; 6 videos included!

My truck has almost 203K miles on it, and aside from burning a little oil, it runs great!

However, in the last month and a half or so, it has developed this obnoxious whine. This whine is most prevalent when the truck is idling or under acceleration. I had the serpentine belt and pulleys replaced last month and this temporarily alleviated the problem, but now it’s back with a vengeance.

My truck runs and drives great, accelerates just fine, and has no warning lights on. All temps are normal as well, and the A/C works great! Of note is that this whine cannot be heard when the truck is in Park or Neutral (it is only heard when in R, D, 3, 2, and L).

I was thinking that the A/C compressor bearing or clutch may be going bad, as that’s where a lot of the noise is coming from, but the aside from the compressor noticeably vibrating the truck when the A/C is on, the A/C works great as mentioned above.

The alternator was just replaced in August 2022 at like 155K-156K miles and seems to be fine. Again there is no CEL or any warning lights indicating their might be a problem.

I have been quoted $733.20 by my mechanic to replace the A/C compressor, and I have the money for it, but I want to make sure that this is actually the problem.

    Any ideas?!?!

^Try replacing just the compressor clutch? It's more DIY friendly as you don't have to open the refrigerant plumbing.

Did you verify the idler pulleys (including the one on the tensioner) rotate smoothly with no slop?

The biggest question I have is why the truck doesn’t do this when it’s in park or neutral. My uncle watched a video I made last night and initially believed, in his own words, that the transmission was fucked…

^Vibration and harmonics can behave weirdly. My father's Subaru and my previous 2nd gen both had less vibration in P or N; transmissions were fine. The idle speed is higher in P or N.

Usually the first culprit with a whine is the power steering pump...

It’s still gonna cost a fortune, but cheaper than a transmission and makes me feel better…

Mine was the belt tensioner, belt jumped partway right as I was pulling into work. The belt sheared down the middle.

I did have a AC clutch go once, would randomly make noise. Never had the AC on as it was winter to figure out if that changed anything

Going off those videos, I'm not at all convinced it's the AC.
I suspect a bad alternator or power steering pump.

A big long screw driver acting as a mechanics stethoscope, and this could be solved in a few minutes.
