It’s definitely a router plane, not a Stanley as Stanley was proud of there name, here’s a Stanley no 71 as reference pat’d March 4 84 (1884) the one of brass I’ve just never seen one like this or this size, just very interesting to me

New addition to our backyard destination post. Moving my son to Austin in a week for UT Grad School.

    These are always fun projects

Then I filled knot holes with black epoxy resin. I hate that stuff!

Not fine wood working but a needed project for my garage makeover. It was my 4th of July project.
Started with a bunch of salvaged materials and a solid 2" thick ash slab that I milled. It's my last ash slab, it's all gone here now.
    20240704_135112.jpg
It's going to be a narrow bench at 16" but that's what the slab gives me and I really don't have room for more depth.
    20240704_135124.jpg
I was going to cut the top down but decided to leave it long and overhang. It will have a middle shelf to store crap on.
    20240704_153641.jpg
Set in place but not permanently. I'm going to attach a can tray on the back side.
    20240704_155232.jpg
The can tray will close the gap.
    20240704_155243.jpg
    Gotta have tunes.
    20240704_155954.jpg
Vise will go on the left end.
    20240704_160005.jpg
The top will get rough sanded and some kind of finish applied just to seal it. It's a mechanic bench so nothing fancy like my wood shop bench will get.

That's one heck of an ash slab! I had to glue together 2 pieces to make 18 inches wide and thought those 2 pieces were big.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
It's wood and you worked it. It all counts. That bench is going to last a long time.

The faults that can be found in my 3 2ftx4ft desks, nightstand with folding side pockets, full-width towel stand, 15 ft computer desk, 4ftx6ft shelf unit ... absolutely staggering in count.

But they perform the tasks I need. You do not need to defend anything to us.

Well the workbench I'm building for the wood shop should be much better, lol. I've had to take a break from it for awhile due to other summer projects around the house. But I should be getting back on it when the garage is done. It weighs about 400lbs so it's not going anywhere.:ballchain:

My 15 ft desk is 2x4s topped with 1/2 in plywood (and a few 2x4s horizontally under the top for extra support). 3 parts at a 70-degree leg for one end. Not sure it weights 400 lbs, but the 70-degree bend means it does not tip over when all 3 sections are locked with 3/8 in bolts, and feels like a ton when all 3 sections make essentially a single 15-ft beam.

You may need vertical strength more than my desk, but "engineering" works wonders.

This bench does weigh a couple of hundred pounds. Top is 1 in thick (maybe 1.5 inches) and bench is 8 ft by 4 ft. Sold that house a few years back but I was bored at the time so started building ... to the left you can see the end of one leg of a U-shaped 4 shelf-design.

Got in the shop today to work on the can tray for the workbench. Sticking with my motto that wood is free and it's everywhere I selected some hardwood boards from my stash, been in the shop over a year so it's plenty dry . 3 oak and 1 maple.
    20240706_152844.jpg
    Ran em through the jointer.
    20240706_155634.jpg
Now jointed on 2 sides. Notice the ant holes, lol. Kinda looks cool and will work just fine as the bottom board for the tray.
    20240706_155336.jpg
Next I ran them through the planer to thickness them.
    20240706_161036.jpg
They cleaned up just over 5/8"
    20240706_161537.jpg
Ripping to width on the table saw.
    20240706_162308.jpg
I used thick ca glue, a brad nailer, and accelerator. Zero dry time needed.
    20240706_165041.jpg
Cans fit fine and will also hold a quart can.
    20240706_172349.jpg
    Tray is 5x5.
    20240706_172355.jpg
It will hang off the back of the bench after I sand the top. Right now the top is a rough chainsaw finish.
