Morning all, I'm looking forward to catching up on some sleep now that the late night booms should be done :bored:. My town seemed to enjoy it's freedom extra hard this week and it's kept me from getting enough beauty rest. And I do so need it haha

A while back I found a beautiful (to me anyway) piece of drift wood from a burn area while on a hike.

It already had two pretty flat places on it so I just flattened them to fit the pots, put some poly on it and boom. A plant shelf thing is born. Nowhere near the level of woodworking I've seen here, but not bad for me Resized_20240703_111203_1720026869775.jpg

    Question for you all

I'm looking at building a pull up bar in my back yard. I know that ground to wood contact will mean rot. So what are my options if using wood?

If I use pressure treated and put it in my hole, then cement around it.. would it last?

I also see there are anchor systems I could set in concrete instead of the posts itself.

If anyone has input on building the best set up I'd love to hear it. I want to get this thing stable and durable .

Id prob stain the bottom, put that sleeve over then bury in concrete like the pics show.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
The rot is only going to be an issue for the first foot into the ground. That's where all the oxygen and "creatures" are.

So, do your best to "sleeve" the PT posts to just proud of the ground to slow down the decay.

I've got a pair of cloths line posts made of "boxed" 2X6. (Hollow core) Concrete poured around onto the hand dug holes. They have been out there 30 years now.

    Nice job!
Good job on having the vision to see a project in a random piece of wood too.

Probably any pressure treated post in cement will last many years.
If you could score some used telephone poles that would be all the better, I believe the part in the ground is treated with creosote.

There's also something like this that may work for you. But the other suggestion might be cheaper if you are only needing 2 posts done. The product I suggested is like a heat shrink for the post. You'll need a source of heat to get it to shrink down on the post, for example, I had one of those propane weed killer nozzles that I used when I put up fencing at my old place. Yes, like it was suggested above, only about the first foot or so is where the biological interaction occurs to rot the wood. I dug holes about 3 ft down, poured a gravel base around the post about 1 foot deep to set the post. Poured about 1 foot of concrete and had the sleeve measured to take up the remaining foot of ground contact. Worked well in my situation but I couldn't tell you how long it lasted since I moved.

...and just how long does a telephone pole last...

    Heavy rain late this afternoon.

On my way home (about 2 miles away) I came upon a nice young fellow with a telephone company van, seems the pole rotted off at the base and blew over putting the wire across the road.

He said the wires didn't seem compromised -- my internet is working. :)

You don't want wood to earth contact, but you also want any water that seeps down along the wood to have an exit at the bottom to drain out. So I'd use pressure treated 4X4 lumber with 3-4" of pea gravel in the bottom of the hole, then concrete in place. That should last for decades.
