2TRFE Idler Pulleys and Tensioner Part Numbers

There have been a few questions about a replacement for the tensioner pulley on the 2TRFE Tacoma. At least in my 2006 the

The OEM parts are:

Top Idler Pulley on the Tensioner: 16603-0P030
Bottom Idler Pulley bolted to the block: 16603-31030
AC Idler Pulley: 88440-25070

The Gates part numbers are

Top:36173
Bottom: 36174
AC: 36614

If you want to press new bearings in it saves a ton of money and its pretty easy with a puller and an old socket.

Bearing numbers are:

Top: 6203DUL1 - 17mm x 40mm x 12mm (Regular deep groove ball bearing with double shield)
Bottom: two of 6302RMX - 10mm x 42mm x 13mm (This one is an oddball, as the 6302 has a 15mm bore normally, so you can't get these from a regular bearing shop)
AC: two of 6303DU2 - 17mm x 40mm x 14mm (Regular deep groove ball bearing with double shield)

Bearings usually have a number on them that specs what size it is. There is a bearing regulatory commission of sorts that exists that standardized this stuff. In theory a bearing should never go bad for the application it’s used in and they have all sorts of charts and data to help engineers figure out what bearing to use, but obviously sometimes that’s too expensive and they also want to sell replacement parts so it doesn’t always happen like that. I had to take a class on bearings and gears hence I know this useless stuff lol.

Searching on parts.toyota.com, these part numbers aren't matching up.
I would like to do all the idlers pulley on my 2trfe.
I believe there are 3. Two of which are identical.
Recently started screeching above 2500rpm, and I want to replace them all and be done with it.
The belt is brand new already, replaced it last year.

Any guidance would be great. Thank you!

 

For 2005-2007 models (if I recall correctly), the Toy bottom pulley has been discontinued. All that I read says the aftermarket ones rub, and the workaround is to use a washer underneath. Some seem to have the washer included (can't remember which ones). Gates issued a TSB and advises purchasing hardware kit Gates #91051 to deal with spacers/washers, but it is over $100 easy. (Hint: Search 91051 on Ebay for deals.) I think even the replacement p/n Toy pulley is tight. Part numbers may differ for 2008+ models (again, if I recall correctly).

Gates part numbers are

Top Idler pulley on the Tensioner: 36173 (This is sort of an off-the-grid recommendation since catalogs will say it's wrong, but aren't assuming tensioner pulley replacement.)*
Bottom: 36174 (called "Upper" in catalogs)**
AC: 36614 (called "Lower" w/AC in catalogs)

* Various catalogs are unclear about this, perhaps because different manufacturer tensioners were used in manufacturing. Therefore, providing a VIN and closely inspecting the part may be a best solution. Also, I would recommend replacing the actual tensioner instead of just the tensioner pulley. That's because the spring inside the tensioner is under constant load and vibration so likely fatigues and/or weakens over time with heat and vibration. Just buy a new made-in-Japan tensioner.
** See Toyota Parts website for "Previous Version(s)". (Note, at this time the site sucks, and you have to search it with Google to get any meaningful information.) The Gates version from all info is like the newer Toy version so the h/w kit is needed. AC Delco Gold makes on available on Rock Auto that includes bolt/spacer/washer but it's thermoplastic. BUT NOTE THAT you may want the Toy version, anyway, since it is a double bearing design versus aftermarket single-bearing pulleys (that won't last).

I’m having trouble with replacing the bottom pulley (one that bolts to the block) on my 2005 2.7l. Seems like the pulley bearing has a smaller interior diameter on the 2008-2015 updated part. So has anyone successfully installed the updated OEM part 16603-31040 on a 2005-2007 Tacoma 2.7l? Seems like it would need a different (small diameter) bolt and spacer to work? Or should I just go with the

$70 gates 36174 idler pulley

gates 36174 (and maybe a 1/8 washer?) Also curious if anyone has found a reputable source for the Koyo 6302RMX bearings if I end up having to just press them out. Not sure if I trust the eBay/“Asian Auto parts”ones

 

Yeah, I bought a Koyo 16603-31040 a couple months ago and it was priced right and fantastic: https://www.ebay.com/itm/322622068244 .

The hardware kit is the key. For the 16603-31040 there's a weird ferrule/spacer/bushing thingie that adapts it for certain variants. Also, and this is important, The Gates is *not* an identical replacement whereas the Koyo matches as a "double bearing" (look around edges of pulley). You'll get more longevity from a double bearing, I believe. It's cheap so I took a chance and bought it. Made in Japan and it looks like a duplicate of the original toyota part for a fraction of the price.

If you didn't get the hardware kit, you can get all the hardware from this b*tchin hardware kit which is a clone of a brand-name kit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/274455114056 . It's like $100 less than the brand name but made by the same company, I believe. Lots of extra hardware there, too. I bought it, and it looks fantastic.

 

I bought my tensioner pulley, idler and belt on ebayand if I do it again will just get them through a Toyota dealer online. Quality was questionable, not sure how long they will last (bearings), doesn't seem worth it to do it twice

That's not what I posted. I know it's hard, nigh impossible sometimes, to get the right parts on Ebay. The secret is that Toyota contracts out for high quality, tightly spec'd parts. Those links are only made in Japan parts by the OEM manufacturer, and that's exactly what I wanted. Also, consider they were a third or half the price. If you buy Ebay and it's not what was expected, just return it. No harm, no foul.

The kicker: You *cannot* get one of the original parts from Toyota (2005-2008, maybe later/discontinued). You'll need spacers and/or a washer for the replacement p/n. The Gates parts are decent but they are definitely not the same (not "double bearing"). If you have the capacity to properly inspect and match parts there's no reason to pay mucho extra for a nice, shiny red and white box.
