Comparing race trucks to vehicles used recreationally is comical. 90% of the folks saying racecar such and such does well etc. Racecars are rebuilt after every race...they destroy aloy of parts or wear em out every single race, even the class 2000 trucks.

Swingset steering is probably the toughest option for an IFS truck that provides good feedback.

Even the tundra racks can only withstand soo much.they can have seal failures and u can bend a ram if you hit somthing hard enough(I've done it).

In offroad parts will fail no matter what, just depends if it's this weekend or next, abuse eventually will find the weak spot. It's a fact of the hobby.

The argument for "oh I could buy a jeep that's more capable" depending on your skills etc, yes that's true. But with skill and some ambition you can be money ahead of a jeep pretty easily and have a more reliable drivetrain, AC and windows, besides trucks look cooler anyway.

A 37" tire isn't big these days, most trails are dug out from 40s these days. But line choice will remain king over what components you have. All the beefy stuff etc, just allows you more driver error in most cases.
And no you don't need most the crap you guys buy and slap on these trucks to make it thru trails other than it looks cool or checks off a box in your head. At the end of the day who cares? Did ya have fun? Yes? Cool mission accomplished.

Build a rig for what your going to use it for, the Swiss army knife truck does not exist. That's why I have two very different built trucks and as time goes on, they are configured more and more farther apart from each other. Spend less time on the internet worrying about the next hot item and spend it in the garage fixing somthing or planning your next trip and just get out there in the dirt and the rocks. Put the keyboard down. Enjoy your truck in reality

    Stupid question -

Has anyone made a custom harness bar for access cabs? I know having no b pilar makes it hard. Cage would be an option but I like my interior and just want the coolness of harnesses

    Yes
    lemme translate this…

“ Hi, my access cab without a b pillar is the most likely to collapse in a roll over but i want to look cool while my harness has me trapped in my seat as my roof crushes my neck and brain bucket and turns me into vegetable soup “

Do not do harnesses without a cage.

What differences does a seatbelt vs harness make in a rollover??

Absolutely enormous differences. Ever been in a harness? You can’t move. At all. You roll, you’re getting wrecked for life.

Roof comes down on you, you’ve got problems. Same thing with a caged truck. If you’re running around with a 3 point. You’re probably gonna brain yourself if you even get rear ended.

I’m glad safety is the one thing many of us can actually agree on honestly. It’s not something to be taken lightly.

Even some of the basic overland style builds really should have a very minimalist cage of sorts.

With all of the extra weight and potential added to these trucks. I often cringe at the thought of what guys are doing with absolutely zero added protection. It’s honestly something all of us should have in mind.

My cage is probably my favorite modification to my entire truck. It handles better, and I feel safe at all times.

Wait so how does this work? From the pictures and description on jd fab, it sounds like it uses a modified stock rack. Is that right?

Hans devices are absolutely necessary if you plan on using harness/helmet.

Also wanna add on here, I think the Tacoma is better than a lot of trucks for a lot of reasons, but also sucks more than a lot of trucks for probably an equal amount of reason. My Tacoma is feather light compared to the raptor, has a hell of a lot more power, but it’s small, has a shorter wheelbase, and looks like shit relatively. But my Tacoma outboogies my king swapped raptor by a fucking mile.

I always laughed when a certain someone always said a stock raptor would “drag any Tacoma in here”. I’ve rolled with raptors. They can’t hang. So thank you, for actually owning one AND admitting it.

    Whole lotta stuff
Whenever I hear anyone outside here mention the word "cage" or "roll-cage," the thought is immediately safety. Which, to be fair, protection is primarily the purpose of a cage. But not everyone thinks of the performance benefits to a cage, the rigidity added to the body and frame, tying suspension components together, the whole system works better (besides noise transmission, not looking forward to that). Speaking of overlanders and mild cages, I've pretty much relegated my truck to "prelander" status. Basically I wanna go faster than mid-travel can, but within the limits of what tuning and equipment is capable of to try and not break as much stuff. Even that proposition has me thinking of a mild cage for safety/performance/handling. Body-on-frame all twisting and creaking at speed seems counter productive. That being said, gonna enjoy this truck in whatever stage it's in.

Finally finished the front rebuild on the truck. Got it rolling for one day, but having fuel system issues now. Filler neck burst and dumped fuel everywhere, thinking a vent line is clogged.

Don’t get me wrong it’s a bad ass truck, and my wife looks sick AF driving around a black raptor with king 4 tube bypasses in the rear and king IBP’s in the front. Mall crawling for sure. I enjoy it Offroad but every time I get on dirt I regret not taking my Tacoma instead. It’s a heavy girth girl.

I’ll probably get it strapped and bumped soon and fix a lot of the issues that I have with it.

I'd really love to cage my truck but man, the amount of time/effort/skill involved to do it right is just so high. One day. One day!

Correct. I guess I'm not sure what you're asking?
JD fab's slide rack is for a modified Tacoma rack

There is a slight modification done on the stock rack on the left end. You cut about 1/4 to 1/2 inch off the body of the rack right around where the rack comes out. Then install a seal.. easy part of the job really. I circled where I cut off a piece of the rack body. Then a seal slides in there.

Idk it all depends on use case. Personally for me I hate convoys and driving on any stretch of a trail that I could walk faster than I can drive it if there’s a faster way to get where I’m going. I’d rather get to hike or be climbing on my trips out to the desert or forests and I knew an IFS 4x4 first Gen was within my budget and would help get me to where I wanted to be faster. 35’s we’re all I’d need and maybe even more. It’s just changed on here when guys used to all wrench on their trucks and have fun to where people come to complain about parts that weren’t even available back then and had they been, guys back then would have been able have that much more fun.

Mid travel guys on 37’s that enjoy cutting up their trucks to stuff tires and joke around are more fun than the moaners complaining about $10k desert designed front ends breaking in rock gardens on 40’s that sas trucks just walk.

Get the TEDesign cage and you can keep most of your interior. My interior looks great IMO.
