I remember reading about the Sportster rider. I think he broke down on the first one he tried close to the end (maybe transmission) I remember Warchild was saying I told you so. My hats off to him, I know a few who did SS on Sportsters and I made sure the people I knew understood, what I did on a Goldwing was nothing like what they did. My ride was a little boredom, a few leg cramps and a lot of bitching about getting stuck behind 5 miles of semi's on I-40 running 58 mph in both lanes. A straight through thousand miles on a Sportster is a tough ride.

Pretty sure that generation of husky has been passed around as far as tooling since that time, parts availability might be hard ... SWM might have rejuvenated that tooling most recently.

Where I live, if I rode dirt I would have a long ass drive hauling them, so in my case, I dont ride dirt anymore. LOL But I aint looking for excitement, I had more than enough of that trying to make a living as a 100% commissioned welding sales guy for the last 40 years.

On those big number, multi day rides the trick is that the "average " miles per day is 1k or more. The 100k in 100day ride, he was able to knock out some days closer to 1500 back to back then have time banked to allow service. Harley Davidson uses hydraulic lifters so no valve adjustments are needed. Bulk of his days were in western states with higher speed limits. Ride was done as a charity ride raising money for a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy which Harley Davidson is a huge supporter of. I understand his dealership even had some of their mechanics willing to work odd shifts to help keep him going with minimal down time.

I gave my 07 FJR to a BMW rider on day 10 of the 2019 Iron Butt Rally. His GS1200 suffered catastrophic engine failure a little over 100 miles from me. I happened to be the nearest person who did rallies so I got a text that morning seeing if I could help out. Another friend roughly 3 hours away offered up his bike as well. I felt I had to do it so as to continue the streak of more FJRs finishing the IBR than starting it.

I still have occasional 7 hr round trips or meeting my other buddy in Arkansas (5 each way). But I signed up for a local membership which helps me get more riding in. Only an hour away.

Last time out was the 7 hr round trip day and broke my finger at the last trail.

I never rode dirt. Good friend growing up raced motocross and I watched him get enough stitches and casts.

Dirt, loved street and dirt. Dirt for me was desert riding. 10 of us from the Adventure Rider Forum booked a 3 day riding clinic in the Mojave with Jimmy Lewis. Jimmy was one of our top Dakar riders at the time.

Great three days, I learned so much.

Gotcha, I didn't realize it was an average, I thought it was a daily figure! Makes sense.

When I did a memorial Saddlesore and Bun burner last year my friend and I screwed up when we stopped getting receipts once the Bun burner was complete. We actually could have had a Saddlesore 2k. The first 24 hour period we had closer to 1300 miles. We broke 2000 withe almost 3 hours to spare.

Going back to the HD thing, yeah, some guys really get their undies in a bundle over it, yes I prefer my brand, (HD), but, I like all motorcycles, started out on a Bridgestone, then 3 Kawasaki bikes. Don’t matter to me what you ride, we all enjoy them, so take pride in your ride, and ride the wheels off them ! I’ll wave at anyone on two wheels.

Riding dirt and doing motocross are entirely different worlds . I've ridden dirt my whole life , I have zero interest in motocross. You should give it a chance !! I've ridden street too , but dirt is more fun.

I give everyone the wave. The only bikes that I get the occasional snub are Harley riders. I just call them a dumb ass inside my helmet then move on.

In all the chaos after the bike trip I left my riding jacket at my buddy's. He shipped it back to me, but it won't be here until I go back to work. Kinda kicking my ass for that one.

Back in the 60's when Honda started the wave thing with their "you meet the nicest people on a Honda" campaign there were so few bikes on the road waving was no problem. A few decades later in my California tourist beach town located on Hwy 1, summer day waving became a pain in the butt because there were so many motorcycles on the road. I gave up trying to wave back unless it was off season and cold and even wet when only the more serious riders were out.

Honestly, late fall out in the country in the western states during cold weather I generally only saw three types of motorcycles when I traveled, Harley Davidson, usually Road Kings, big BMW's and Goldwings. There were exceptions, but those three made up the majority of the bikes when the weather went south.
