I bought my 2024 Tacoma SR5 Double Cab last weekend. I noticed before I bought it, that the bed liner doesn't have any storage compartments. I don't understand why Toyota didn't add some. If I have car seats in the back and need my ratchet straps for instance, that's a pain in the butt to have to remove one car seat to access the underseat storage. I suppose I'll look for some kind of after market add on compartment.

I never kept any in the bed in my 17 because they ended up full of dirt. I always had mine under the seat and kept 2 in the door incase I couldn’t get under the seat.

For the price increase you’d think they would add storage in the bed. I thought th same thing when I buying my sr5. Not a big deal but common

I sealed my 2016 storage boxes. It was a task but well worth it.

Saw a red base model Colorado today didn't look bad. Might start looking at Mavericks at this point, it's the only small truck like vehicle out there.

I own a maverick and it drives just like any compact SUV. I have the hybrid version and we're averaging 45MPG. I recently sold my 24' tacoma and I averaged 18MPG with 2400 miles on the odometer. It all depends on what you're looking for, I went back to a 23 with the V6.

Why would you go back to a 3rd gen ?

Key would not be detected randomly, (left me stuck at work several times). 4x4 would take a very long time to engage and it would get stuck on 4x4 mode, only way to disengage it was to place it on reverse and it would randomly disengage. Dealer was able to replicate both issues. They suggested to wait for recalls which I was not going to wait. This fully loaded third gen offroad premium was available and they have dropped the price to move it, decided to trade it in. Have not have any issues with the third gen. I'm sure eventually Toyota will fix these issues alongside with the transmissions, as of now I would highly not recommend anyone to jump on the new gen until they at least iron out the power train issues. I also had an SR5 like yours, have you ran into these issues?

I put items in gallon sized ziploc bags before going into the bed storage compartments.

I bought a waterproof Dewalt Toolbox I keep in the bed. It’s pretty big, but just short enough to fit under the tonneau cover.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.

Crap that doesn't fit anywhere special, I just toss in the bed. Heck! It's a pick-up!

Small stuff goes in the milk crate back there.

My dad replaced his 08 2nd Gen Tundra with a 23 3rd Gen Tundra and traded it back in for a 22 2nd Gen after 5 months too. Weird electronic parking brake, couldn’t engine brake down big grades - it would just wind the motor, no flat floor under the rear seats which he liked to use for coolers and hunting gear on trips. Rear seat room was less in the second to largest cab size as well which made it impossible for full size adults to sit comfortably which wasn’t an issue in the his first 2nd Gen.

While this is perfectly acceptable for a lot of things, I know I have “dirty ratchet straps” and “clean ratchet straps” which I try to keep from getting dusty and road grimy. My straps stay pretty clean in the cubbies on my 2nd Gen - seems like a lapse in judgement not to keep them. Plus one ratchet strap will have to be devoted to keeping the milk crate from sliding around and it just seems like a low hanging fruit to have convenient bed storage as a perk on a 40k+ truck after it’s predecessors had it for 20 years imo.

plastic bags are your friend. even zip-loc if so inclined. I keep the straps coiled in the rear door pockets on my A/C. Tailgate chains go in the single cubby on my 2021. But even those went into a plastic bag first.

Just trying to give you ideas on how to get around such 'issues".

Or... just return the truck, I'm sure customer service will understand. ;-)

Eh, my newest vehicle is 16 years old and it seems like little things like these were already figured out a long time ago. Maybe the new 4runner or Land Cruiser are more well thought out but for sure some of the little details that were smart ideas on the Toyota truck gens introduced in 03-07 seem like they should have only been improved upon, not the other way around.

Maybe they’ll come out with a TRD milk crate for the bed on the Pro next year.

That sucks there’s no storage compartments. I loved having some gloves and straps and jumper cables in my 3rd gen… is there at least more width under the accessory rail? The specs I’ve found gave the same(ish) tailgate width and rail to rail width as 3rd gen, but if it’s just a matter of not enough space between bed and fender for a storage compartment then the extra bed capacity seems like a good compromise.
