The teeth on my rack just started slipping. By tying both ends of the rack, does this really help with the internal strength?

It absolutely helps. Until you push it too hard and lock your steering wheel solid. (I’m gonna get shredded again)

Far less risk, money and work to just toss a tundra rack in.

I’ve had 0 issues since it’s been installed. I used to have alignment issues after every trip, that’s gone. Though I’m pretty sure it’s a combo of the slide rack , lower pivot kit and uniballs in the LCA that stopped all of that. One other thing is I’m 2wd so my rack doesn’t experience the torque steer that 4wd puts on the rack.

But there is a lot of modifications that need to be done on a tundra rack right? With this method you can pretty much just get a replacement from your local auto parts store right?

The tundra rack is significantly shortened.
The tacoma rack is also shortened, so neither would allow a drop in replacement from a parts store.

The Tacoma rack body gets trimmed, not the hardened steering shaft. Really even a replacement from an auto parts store could get you limped home. Untrimmed, you’ll just have limited steering going right. Bring some tools with you, trim it with an angle grinder, clean it off. Run it.

I've read that you also lose ~15% off your steering angle on a Tundra rack. It's not the end of the world but it's the reason why I decided to wait until mine gets a little bit worse before doing it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if you do blow a Tundra rack, you probably don't have a second one easily accessible and are weeks+ out from someone like Basi getting you a new one.

Depends what you call lots of modifications. You have to cut your frame for the slide rack.

I can also confirm, it IS entirely possible to have your steering lock solid on you. I bent both clevis’s AND the solid rod in the slide rack. It’s now in my scrap metal pile

I’ll take having to wait for a replacement rack over having catastrophic failure any day of the week.

his updated one uses puck spacers to line up the rack to the bungs much easier. That way you don’t have to create a new barrel for it. You can carry a spare Tacoma rack and just replace it, should you blow the seals. But the seals are not that bad to replace even on a trail repair. Unless the seals that are blown are on the pinion part.

We blew the seals in Moab, replaced the tundra rack with an aftermarket Tacoma in the parking lot of the oriellys in town.

He said it’s in the works. They sent the kit out to a 3rd party shop for install and getting info and data back is taking a lot longer than they want.

    keeping jersey dirty
people that get 5 figures for doing cages don't want to give prompt feedback to a company that's working on kits that make the job much faster and easier and gives less recognition/reputation to the individual shops for building a good cage. surprise surprise

I got inspired by @snowsk8air2 when I got to ride in his truck. Picked up a full rugged radios intercom and radio set for a steal. 4 seat setup. Gonna integrate it into my center console.
