I’m really not a fan of the black fender flares and door handles on the off road. I know some people love it, but it’s not for me. I think the color matched trucks look a lot nicer. I do however want the locking diff and sway bar disconnect features of the Off Road.

what are the chances I can convince Toyota to build me an Off Road with color matched flares/door handles, or a Sport with diff lock and sway bar disconnect? Anyone here managed to get Toyota to make custom changes to a build or will all the dealers tell me I’m dreaming?

I don’t want to buy an Off Road and have to paint these items on a brand new truck. Would probably rather buy a Sport and put in an aftermarket E-Locker. Could at least use it in 2WD & 4HI I guess. Could maybe retrofit the sway bar disconnect from a wrecked one at a later date.

But yeah, will Toyota allow me to make those custom changes to my build or nah?

No, Toyota will not do that. Best bet is buy an OR and source the painted stuff from someone wanting black that has your color. No lockers available and it’ll probably be a couple years at least before options are offered.

0%. It's not going to happen. Dealers are allocated specific builds. They don't order them. They have some control over port-installed stuff like bed liner.

My Off Road should be built in the next week or so. :fingerscrossed: It'll be my third with a rear locker. I don't use it very often–perhaps once a year–but when I need it, I frigging need it. (And no, I don't need the sway bar disconnect where I travel in the middle of Idaho.)

Those black fender flairs will grow on you. :transformer:

Damn that sucks. It would have been such an easy option for Toyota to add for the Off Road too. Like you could choose between blacked out or color matched flares/handles.

i would very rarely need a rear locker (let alone sway bar disconnect) as i’d mainly be doing overlanding not hectic trails trying to test the limits. But yeah better to have one and not need it than need it and not have it right.

I’m still leaning towards the Sport for the looks haha and just wait for aftermarket rear locker or find one from a wrecked off road. I’m sure they can be re-wired with a simple off/on circuit and skip going through the ECU so it can be used in any mode not just 4LO.

I wish Toyota had you working in product planning.

The gigantic black overfenders combined with the additional well space needed to accommodate larger diameter wheels looks awkward on lighter colors on OR’s, and especially awkward on any Pro (besides black) b/c they’re shiny. When viewed from the side, all that black-space cuts too far into the body lines, kind of like when someone went overboard with biggie-size aftermarket black fenders on a Gen2 or Gen3.

But I do admit that I like the new fake hood scoops. So for me, an OR equipment package with Sport appearance is the sweet spot.

Yeah I want the Bronze Oxide color which is lighter and agree with all your points.

Let me think about this. A non-functional hood scoop or a Tacoma with a locker and better tires? All for the same money.

I can’t imagine it would cost more than a few hundred bucks to have a local body shop spray your flares and door handles.

your chances of Toyota building you that is ZILCH. You can however do it yourself. It would be cool if you could custom order options through Toyota though

If you’re going off road you’ll appreciate the lack of paint chips on the black fender flares.

Nissan will make you a bespoke truck. Toyota will decide what they feel like selling you.

No way no how. Just get a black or underground Off-Road where the overfenders blend with the sheet metal and call it a day. I personally like the contrast provided by black overfenders on most colors.

Scrubbed some tires, and knocked a dent out.
Damn. I honestly like my black fenders better than the painted ones. To each their own I guess, but there definitely should be more options. Is it a 4th gen thing that the handles are black? Because my 3rd gen are paint matched and I also prefer that.

It’s funny how OEM’s position their vehicles. I think most of us would consider the painted trim and door handles a higher trim package, but now Toyota turned that on its head. I like the painted arches and handles. It’s a nicer, more consistent look. I don’t mind the OR look, but it feels like a downgrade because of how they normally do “upgrades”.

Depends which OR you're talking about. In Canada:
OR 6MT considered a standard package, no additional cost
OR 8AT an upgrade from the SR5 and TRD Sport
OR 8AT Premium, top of the line

I've been wanting this since the 3rd gen. AC/XC, SR, high output engine tune, 4x4, rear locker, black over fenders, solid black interior. I'd go for a sand beige interior on Bronze Oxide or Black truck. Basicly a 4G Prerunner with 4wd. Never happened, won't ever happen. It's all shit from the Toyota parts bin, it's always been possible.

    Edit

The closest thing I could find was the Super Cab 21-23 Ranger STX 4x4 with a rear locker.

just a couple of things tbh
this is the one thing toyota lacks in... most other manufactures if you want a locker you can add it on to the truck no matter the configuration..... toyota and jeep limit it to only select models so they can charge you more because yes!....
