That 426 Max Wedge car is badass! Any idea if it's a factory Max Wedge or if it's a factory lightweight? They are extremely rare!

 

No idea. I can say they worked hard enough for the stock look to be possible; but my detail knowledge only goes so far.. Never seen that car there before. If they show up at COTA, I will endeavor to find out.

 

Hemi's are cool too but I really like the old factory drag race cars with the 426 Max Wedge.

The compression ratio on those Max wedge motors was outrageous - would be difficult to get gas for them these days! The only one I was ever around was being fed half and half - av gas and unleaded premium.

A lot of serious old school guys run Aviation fuel like you say but at 75/90%

 

A friend of mine had a 1964 Plymouth Max Wedge factory drag car with the factory aluminum fenders, hood and bumper back in the late 80s. It was red with an automatic trans. He actually owned it in his teens in the 60s, sold it and bought it back in the 80s. Even back then with premium fuel it would ping. If he really wanted to run it, he would go fill up with airplane fuel at the airport. That car had to much torque at full throttle that it would twist the frame and lift one of the front wheels, left I think, off the ground. The factory suspension was woefully inadequate for the HP/Torque of the car and it was a major handful to drive it you stomped on it. Such a cool car!

Still have mine as well. We bought it in the early 90s and use it often. It just keeps running! It also makes the best rotisserie chicken.
