Got a 2023 tacoma with a pop and lock installed at the port before I even knew the truck existed. Two week ago the truck wasnt locking/unlocking with the pop and lock, took it apart and noticed it didnt have enough force to move the tailgate lock. I contacted toyota and since I bought it in gulf state toyota area of influence, and i live in the denver area of influence, they refuse to help me because it was a "gulf toyota port add on and not a TOYOTA port add on". So I message pop and lock, show them the video of the accuator trying to move it, they said its going bad, no problem we will send you one free of charge for a warranty replacement.

    Cool.

I get the accuator today, i undo the tailgate plastic to get to the pop and lock, I try to press lock/unlock to watch the OLD "broken" connector try to move, there is NO power now at all, it went to in the span of a week trying to work, to not working. So I go fine, its broken. Take it out and install the new pop and lock accuator i got for the warranty replacement. Hit the lock/unlock button, and NO POWER at all what so ever, it doesnt even try to move. Now I am frustrated. Could it be a fuse? Did I miss a step? its supposed to lock/unlock with the truck keyfob like before but it doesnt even try to move or make an effort which makes me think its getting no power. How could it go from TRYING to almost work one day to no power at all to either acctuator, new or old without me messing with me? could it have blown a fuse by it going out? The door locks work with the keyfob every door even the one its wired into and they lock/unlock fine but no power is going to the rear of the truck to activate the auto unlock/lock.

here are a couple pictures of the new accuator attached. Any advice is appreciated. Toyota refuses to help. Pop and lock can only do so much.

Remove the Passenger's kick panel, verify the wires from tailgate to there. The OEM one has 2 fuses at that location. I don't know if P&L duplicate the install.

Edit: they do if it's the same as this one.

I have a GS Port installed tail gate lock on my 2023 TRD Sport now I am concerned mine may go out. I thought they would use an OEM tail gate lock not an after market pop and lock. I just can’t see Toyota allowing the port to install an aftermarket part.

I suggest you go to a different dealer and make Toyota repair the lock under warranty and if you do indeed have a pop and lock port installed ask them to replace it with OEM.

Toyota GS and SE are the worst.

It's a pretty simple system so if there is no power at all there are only a few places to check.

One point to clarify, when this was working was it connected to the front door locks (single button press) or the back door locked (double button press)? Are you using the number of fob button pushes to open the lock?

Do you have a multi-meter or test light?
    • There is one connection in the tailgate. You have verified this is connected.
    • One connection under the truck near the spare. (verify this is connected)
    • 2 Fuses in the driver's side kick panel. (verify fuses are good)
    • Connections in the kick panel: strait spade taps and pins pushed into a connector. (verify all this is connected)
If the door locks are working when you use the fob to unlock the truck, then it's unlikely it's a factory fuse as this is tapped into the factory door circuit. You could also have a chafed or cut wire so check the whole wire from front to back.

It is a genuine Toyota part and they can't deny a warranty claim. They can only deny dealer installed options.

I'm in the same boat except my actuator went out. My truck is just over a year old. I noticed this week that the tailgate wasn't locking and after thinking about it I realized that I haven't heard the very loud actuator for a while now. I confirmed they used the Pop & Lock kit. I assumed the Gulf States Distributer would only install the OEM Toyota lock kit. I traced the wire looking for the fuses and the installer wire tapped the factory harness on the drivers side instead of using the factory style T-harness. I'm definitely not a fan of them using Scotchlok style connectors on a new trucks wiring. One fuse was bad and after replacing it the lock actuator still does not work. It does try to actuate but is not strong enough to work properly. I assume after several more failed lock and unlock cycles the fuse will burn up again. I would expect my dealer to fix the actuator under warranty. It's good to know that Pop & Lock sent the OP a new actuator under warranty for a port installed kit. I might check into that for now instead of taking my chances with the technicians at my dealer. I almost expect another hack job. They screwed up my 10K oil change last year by installing the wrong filter. I recently caught that mistake when I did my own 15K mile oil change.
